Thanksgiving Edition of the Subspace Communication Newsletter

by Highway of Life on Friday, November 28th, 2008 03:28

Greetings everyone!

First of all, I would like to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving!
I would like to extend a big Thank You to our entire community, you guys are the reason StarTrekGuide has grown so much over the last few years and continues to grow ever stronger. A special Thanks to the Staff of StarTrekGuide, thank you guys for everything you do to keep STG running smoothly, from Moderation to Support and Development of STG projects. I cannot thank you guys enough.

It?s been five months since we sent out our last newsletter, since then I?ve heard it from many of you wishing to see the Newsletter again, and well... here it is (obviously), sorry it took so long for us to get our act together to send this thing out again. So much has happened over the summer, it?s difficult to summarise into a single post. After our March Newsletter, we had the big Deck 15 Invasion, as I?m sure many of you heard... or saw rather, as you become assimilated by the Borg from entering Deck 15. We?ve had requests to bring Deck 15 back and I can tell you now, that is going to happen again, but at an undisclosed date. We also had that very interesting episode with the Bertie Presidential Election, won by Albertie Einstein.
In this newsletter, we?ll highlight details about the STG MOD Development Manager, the phpBB Wiki, the Junior MOD validators, and... yes, a new phpBB release: phpBB 3.0.3, which includes some features discussed from Londonvasion.

There have been several big announcements with the phpBB project recently, ChrisRLG was promoted to Business Manager, wGEric the new Operations Manager, and of course eviL<3 to Modifications Team Leader. The phpBB Wiki has been released and currently holds quite a bit of extremely useful information for MOD and Style Authors. MODX 1.2 has been released which employs quite a few new features and functionality. A phpBB Events and Meetings forum was created to facilitate local usergroup meetings and discussions regarding future Londonvasion type phpBB Events. The Junior Validators group has been created to assist the phpBB Modifications Team in validating MODs. That group is proving to be a major success, MODs are validated at a rate faster than any time in the past that I have been a part of phpBB.
For information on all of this and more, visit the Announcements and News forum.

MOD Development Manager and MODX Generator
StarTrekGuide itself has undergone some changes since March. We?ve been working on the MOD Development Manager, which is now in it?s second version preview (0.2.0), for all you MOD Authors out there, it has a nice MODX script generator that you can play with to automatically create your own MODX files. No more manually messing around with the XML language.

New STG Development Team Leader
Just last month, one of STG?s administrators and STG Development Team Leader, Igor (eviL<3) became the new phpBB.com Modifications Team Leader, succeeding wGEric who moved on to become the Operations Manager for the phpBB project.
In Igor?s place, the STG Administrators decided to promote Michael (mtotheikle, formerly known as xhotshotx) to the position of STG Development Team Leader. Mike has been extremely active with the development of the STG MOD Development Manager, as well as a secret project that we?re working on. We felt that he would make an excellent candidate to move STG development ahead for the phpBB and STG Community.

That?s all for now, enjoy the read. If you have any suggestions for future Newsletters, please reply to this post.

Until next time, see you all on the boards!! :D

New phpBB.com Modifications Team Leader

by wGEric on Tuesday, October 28th, 2008 16:49

As of today [Oct, 28] I have resigned as Modifications Team Leader. You will still see my elephant around as I take a different role with phpBB. More details on this will be announced at a later date.

It is my pleasure to announce evil<3 as my successor. He is an excellent author and has a good heart (despite his name). He has excellent goals that, in my opinion, will help bring the Modifications Team and community together to provide the best experience we can for everyone.

You can discuss this announcement here: viewtopic.php?t=8346

STG MOD Development Manager 0.2.0 Released

by mtotheikle on Saturday, October 25th, 2008 22:41

The STG Development team is pleased to announce that STG MOD Manager 0.2.0 has been released.

We have fixed many bugs including:
UTF-8 Support, no more strange characters in edits
Can now sort MOD's when browsing
When you release a MOD in development status and change it to released, the topic title now will be updated to [RELEASED] instead of [DEV]
Other miscellaneous bugs have been fixed as well for better management

New features include:
MOD authors can now create FAQ to answer questions to eliminate the need of answering the same question over and over.
When creating a new MOD and attaching a valid MODx, all the information such as file edits, SQL queries, includes, and other MOD information will be added automatically.

If you encounter any bugs, have feedback or suggestions, please drop us a note in the viewforum.php?f=11bugs forum.

Thanks for using the MOD Manager and please provide your thoughts and comments to help us make a better MOD management system for all phpBB users.

With this new release we urge all MOD authors to move their MODs into the Mod Manager if you haven't already. If you are unsure about this there please feel free to post here viewtopic.php?f=14&t=8315 or if you feel a PM is better, feel free to PM Handyman or mtotheikle. STG will be archiving the "phpBB3 Olympus MODs / Add-ons Database" forum and we want MOD Authors to have a chance to move all their MODs if they choose. The Mod Manager offers a variety of features such as an FAQ Manager, MODx generator, easy MOD browsing, and many more features that will be coming soon such as the ability to submit your completed MOD to phpbb.com for validating.

Junior MOD Validators

by paul on Monday, October 20th, 2008 13:02

Hello,

After a great amount of feedback from the MOD Community, the Modifications Team is pleased to announce the new Junior MOD Validator team.

The purpose of the Junior Validators will be to assist the Modifications Team with the validation process of MODs submitted to the MOD Database -- starting immediately. We have asked a few well known MOD Authors who are very knowledgeable of the phpBB.com MOD Database, Validation Policies and Validation Process.

If you would like more information about the MOD Junior Validators, or would like to apply for such a position, please visit the following page for more information: http://www.phpbb.com/mods/junior-validators/ Please make sure you read the requirements before applying.

We hope that this change will cause modifications to be validated in a more timely fashion as well as boost the efficiency of the MOD validation process. We also hope that this will give the MOD authors a more inside feeling of our validation process.

You may discuss this announcement here: viewtopic.php?t=8257

Thanks
The phpBB Modifications Team

phpBB Wiki

by Acyd Burn on Saturday, August 30th, 2008 15:53

Hi,

No, not a wiki product by the phpBB Group. ;) I am pleased to announce the addition of a wiki for syndicating code documentation and content at http://wiki.phpbb.com/.

This wiki is a place where you can share your experience with the codebase of phpBB3. Anything related to code documentation, modding/styling tutorials can be added there. Please note that we currently only allow registered users to edit/add pages.

What it is not

The wiki is not meant to be a general documentation of how to use phpBB3. It doesn't describe how to register, post new topics, etc. - this can still be found within our user documentation.

The MOD Documentation available at phpbb.com will be slowly moved to the wiki over the next weeks.

You can discuss this announcement here: viewtopic.php?t=8261
