by Highway of Life on Sunday, June 24th, 2007 13:46

Hello Everyone!

I hope you had a good weekend, I know we did. Finally got some much needed rain, though the lightning strikes have almost outnumbered the raindrops.
This past weekend, had the privilege to join Webmacster87 on the phpBB Weekly podcast episode #21. It was a great show, if you have not yet heard the podcast, I encourage you to head over to the phpBB Weekly Blog and have a listen. :)
Next week?s podcast will feature recaps of the MOD Authors convention, going on the same day. Please feel free to call or write in and participate. More details are below for those of you who were not able to join into the live chat, and an overview of the show. If you have any comments or questions about the show, please reply to the below topic.

I?m sending out another quick newsletter this week due to the release of phpBB3 Release Candidate 2 (RC2), there are some important updates in this release including many bug fixes and a few new features. Remember upgrades are supported from RC1 to RC2, so have at it!! -- See the below announcement for more details.

This week we are featuring the Auto Groups MOD by A_Jelly_Doughnut, which has been a highly requested MOD, especially for those that are concerned about human spammers, and a reminder for you to join us for the MOD Authors Convention next week (June 30).
Let me know for those of you who are viewing this Newsletter in the archives, if you have not received it via email.

Until next time!
- Highway

phpBB3 Release Candidate 2 (RC2) released

by Acyd Burn on Sunday, June 24th, 2007 13:12

Hello,

We are very pleased to announce the availability of the phpBB3 RC2 package. This is the second release candidate which is meant to become the Gold release if no more bugs or problems arise. Of course there may be more release candidates.

On release candidates full support is given, allowing language packs as well as modifications and styles. We only give support to those having a clean RC installation or updates from RC1, previous conversions or updates from betas will not be supported here. We encourage only those running the release candidates wanting to test out the new version, it is still recommended to wait for the full release; after all this is a release candidate.

During the last weeks the convertor have seen a lot of bugfixes and updates, guaranteeing a much more stable conversion as well as numerous updates. Please refer to the complete changelog for a detailed list of fixes since RC-1:

phpBB Weekly #021 Recap

by webmacster87 on Sunday, June 24th, 2007 19:30

If you weren't on the Star Trek Guide Forums last Saturday at Noon EDT, you missed a really significant event as the STG chatbox tracked the live recording of phpBB Weekly, episode #021. STG's very own Highway of Life joined me as a guest on phpBB Weekly to talk about how he built Star Trek Guide and how it transformed from a deck on the Enterprise to center for phpBB3 support and MODs. We then moved on to talking about MODding for phpBB3, including the key things for new MOD authors to focus on, and then we talked about how phpBB3 makes it easier than before to integrate it into a solution for a website.

The Star Trek Guide chatbox was very active during the show, to the point where I ended up following it more than the show's own chatroom. (Sorry to you guys who couldn't get TalkShoe to work.) We had a very excellent discussion, and I really encourage you to check it out. You can listen to the show RIGHT NOW from the phpBB Weekly website.

Coming up this week on phpBB Weekly: Going further down the road to the Gold Master release, phpBB3 RC-2 was released this week with no less than 113 features, changes, and bugfixes in the changelog. We will be looking at and examining the new version, and covering the best way to update to RC-2 (since we haven?t had an officially supported phpBB3 update before!). In addition, the MOD Authors Convention will be going on during the episode recording. We will be covering all of the highlights from the convention in #phpbb-mod, including live updates of the discussion on phpBB MODding Documentation taking place while the show is being recorded. Plus, we might even have a MOD Team member join us on the show! Join us to talk about RC-2, MODding, and any other things you want to discuss during this jam-packed episode of phpBB Weekly!

Join us for phpBB Weekly #022 on Saturday, June 30th, at 12:00 PM EDT/1600 UTC (view local time), live on TalkShoe! All are welcome to participate! For more info about the show and how to join in, check out the phpBB Weekly website.

MOD Authors Convention

With the release of phpBB 3.0.0RC1 and subsequent opening of the phpBB3 MODs forum s, the phpBB MOD team would like to invite MOD authors to the MOD Authors Convention. The convention will be hosted in the #phpbb-mod IRC channel all day on June 30, 2007. The convention will go on all day. Many members of the phpBB MOD Team will show up, I will be there most of the day as well. This is your chance to speak up to ask your own questions, give us feedback, discuss your concerns, and talk about the future of MODding! Constructive criticism is welcome.

In order to have structure during this convention, we will have specific slots during the day in which each topic will be discussed. It is not mandatory that you ask questions during the exact specified time slots, though it will help facilitate discussion. There are two 2-hour time slots for each topic, in order to accommodate participants in different timezones. You can use TimeAndDate.com in order to calculate your local time from these given times. Here are the time slots.

Auto Groups MOD

by A_Jelly_Doughnut on Tuesday, June 26th, 2007 14:45

Description: This MOD allows administrators to place users into groups automatically, based on the time the user has been registered, the number of posts the user has posted, or the number of warnings the user has been issued.

This MOD is fairly mature, and changes will likely be limited to bug fixes. Some performance enhancements may be added as well.

It can be used as an effective antispam tool when combined with phpBB3's permissions system and moderator queue. A group can be set up to add users when they reach two posts, and users with less than two posts can have their posts placed in the moderator queue. Spam will never make it to your board again.
