Fourth Edition of the Subspace Communications Newsletter

by Highway of Life on Tuesday, July 24th, 2007 17:40

Hello everyone!

Wow, the last 3 weeks have been a blur... and HOT! very hot down here in Tennessee USA anyways. We?ve had 5 consecutive days over 100°F (38°C), and if you?re familiar with Southern USA weather, you know it has been humid. You know what a sauna feels like? yeah, thats what it feels like here... ALL the time!
Well we have a very packed newsletter for you this month, though this newsletter is about 2 weeks later than it should have been, better late than never, but you?ll soon find out why. :)

The phpBB Development team recently released phpBB3 RC4, which will, according to Meik (Acyd Burn) hopefully be the final RC release prior to Gold and Final release, which will be an exciting moment in phpBB history.
If you?ve not already, grab the latest RC and update your board, it has some nice enhancements which you can read about in the announcement topic below.
phpBB also won the Community Choice Award for best open-source Communications project, this means bragging rights for the entire year for phpBB.

3 weeks ago to the day (by the time most of you get this letter), wGEric and the phpBB Teams invited Igor (eviL<3) and myself to become a part of the phpBB MOD Team as coders and validators. Ironically, both Igor and myself are Founders of two of the largest phpBB3 MOD Communities on the internet. Igor and I have worked closely on multiple projects and we are both honored for the opportunity that phpBB has presented to us.
At this point, our primary duties will include validating MODs submitted for phpBB3 - though Igor will be working on phpBB2 MODs as well -- and coding projects, including further development and enhancements to the MOD and Styles Databases, which paul (previously paul999) has put so much work into since January to make the MOD Database what it is today. This may explain my suddenly slight lack of presence here on STG/phpBB Academy as I?ve been trying to catch up on all the information and duties that as a MOD Team Member I am responsible for. -- As you can see, I?m finally catching up, so I have time now to write and get this newsletter out. :)
I still plan on continuing support for all my MODs and getting them all released, though the development process is a little slower now with everything else that is going on. -- But overall this is a benefit to the community as it means that all of you have two more validators that can help get MODs validated and released to the phpBB community that much faster.

Most of you also know by now that I am now co-host of phpBB Weekly podcast with Douglas Bell (Webmacster87 / Fountain of Apples and former MOD Team Member). The last few shows have been quite fun, we had Techie-Michael (Support Team Leader for phpBB) join us a guest speaker on the August 4th podcast, and This last weekend, paul joined us for a moment and discussed the MOD Database. -- I think you will all find those most enjoyable, and encourage each of you (especially the MOD Authors) to listen to those podcasts, which can be found at http://phpbbweekly.net

This months featured MODs is Geoffreaks Easy MODX Script Generator, especially helpful for MOD Authors who make a lot of edits to existing files and you need help creating the MODX XML file needed for the installation package of your MOD. If you are one of those kind of people, then YOU NEED THIS TOOL!! ... its an online tool, so you can use it on the fly.
And finally, the ACP Notepad MOD. This MOD will enable you to leave yourself and other administrators notes in the ACP, a handy little tool for leaving fellow admins messages, and reminder snippets for yourself. -- This is a very well coded MOD and is currently in the phpBB.com MOD Database Queue awaiting validation from ... well, me... :D (and the MOD team)

Until next time, see you on the boards!!
- David ?Highway of Life? Lewis

phpBB3 Release Candidate 4 (RC4) released

by Acyd Burn on Tuesday, July 24th, 2007 17:40

Hello,

We are very pleased to announce the availability of the phpBB3 RC4 package - the "Celebrate the unknown Birthday" Edition. This is the fourth release candidate which is meant to become the Gold release if no more bugs or problems arise.

For release candidates full support is given, allowing language packs as well as modifications and styles. We only give support to those having a clean RC installation or updates from previous release candidates, previous conversions or updates from betas will not be supported on phpBB.com. We encourage only those running the release candidates wanting to test out the new version, it is still recommended to wait for the full release; after all this is a release candidate.
Please also note that we urge you to update - we only support the latest version. Bug reports submitted for previous releases will be closed as well as only the latest version being supported here.

RC4 has seen quite a lot of improvements, the software should be overall much more stable. Some important fixes are for example:

Highway of Life is now on the MOD Team!

by webmacster87 on Tuesday, July 24th, 2007 17:40

A big congratulations goes out to our very own David Lewis (Highway of Life), who today was accepted on the phpBB MOD Team! As a retired veteran of the MOD Team myself, I can definitely say that both the team and David are in for a big treat. As the teams are preparing for the imminent release of phpBB3, I know that David will contribute a lot to the team with his Olympus expertise.
David will continue to be a part of phpBB Weekly, and we?ll be talking a bit more about David?s promotion and what it will mean for this show this Saturday on phpBB Weekly #025. However, don?t expect this show to contain any insider-team secrets, we?re not trying to get David fired from his new position now, are we?

Igor Wiedler (Igor) has also been recently invited to the phpBB.com MOD Team! Igor has been a part of the phpBB MOD Community for nearly 2 years now, Igor is the Founder of a popular phpBB MOD community called http://phpbbmodders.net, where he has worked with countless MOD Authors as a mentor and community leader for the ever growing MOD Community of phpBB2 and phpBB3.
Igor has a lot of Modding experience in both phpBB2 and phpBB3 and will prove to become a valuable asset to the MOD Team as a validator for both phpBB versions.

Now, everyone congratulate David and Igor in the usual manner!

SourceForge Community Choice Awards

by Acyd Burn on Tuesday, July 24th, 2007 17:40

We won! SourceForge did say we get bragging rights for a year.

Thank you everybody, we most certainly could not have done this without your help. This award means a lot to us, and hopefully you, the community. As Best Communications Project, it shows that we are doing something right and we really appreciate that acknowledgment from the community.

For more information about this award, you can find the blog at the SourceForge Community Blog. You can also find videos at The 2007 SourceForge Community Choice Awards Party (video).

And yes, we did email them a response on time. Seems the email was lost in their spam filtering. Hopefully our trophy won't get lost in spam filtering on its way to us.

We would also like to congratulate all other participants and winning projects within the other categories.

The Teams.

What?s New on phpBB Weekly?

by webmacster87 on Tuesday, July 24th, 2007 17:40

Well, if you haven't heard, STG's own Highway of Life has joined me as permanent co-host of phpBB Weekly! The addition of Highway (his real name is David Lewis, if you didn't know) to the show will allow us to provide even better content and have better answers for questions on the show. Since my strength is phpBB2 and David's strength is phpBB3, you can see that we'll probably be focusing more on our respective areas of expertise, however having us co-hosting the show means that our show will now consist of more informative discussions, instead of just me saying stuff.

Anyway, we took a few weeks off during July due to the fact that I was away for a few weekends, however we did an interim episode, phpBB Weekly #024, where David and I had a long discussion about phpBB 3.0.RC3, David's appearance on an SEO and Internet Tips Podcast, and also talking a bit about the WordPress blogging platform and loosely comparing the interfaces and coding practices of the two web applications. I definitely encourage you to check out this excellent episode.

However, beginning this Saturday (July 28th), we'll be coming back with our regular live episodes, and we've got some great stuff planned for the show. Here's a little sneak preview:

phpBB Weekly #025 (July 28th): The results for the SourceForge Community Choice Awards will be coming out this week, and as you remember, phpBB was nominated as a finalist. We'll find out if phpBB won, and if they did, we'll be celebrating! Douglas will be going over what's new in the MOD Team's first refresh of MODX, dubbed by smithy_dll as MODX1.0.1, and David will be giving a tutorial on how to add/edit modules in phpBB3--although it's advanced, every phpBB3 MOD author and MOD installer is going to want to be familiar with this system. Also, David might have a big announcement to make on the show...

phpBB Weekly #026 (August 4th): phpBB Support Team Leader Micheal Cottingham (Techie-Micheal) will be joining us on this episode as a guest host. He and David will have a conversation on phpBB3's security features and phpBB3 programming. In addition, we'll probably be asking Micheal to talk a bit about the phpBB Support Team and other general phpBB questions, plus, he says that he'll probably ask me a question or two to try to stump me (which probably won't be that difficult). And of course, if you call in live or join in on the TalkShoe chat room, Micheal will be hearing your comments and answering your questions. It's sure to be a lively show!

phpBB Weekly is recorded live on TalkShoe most Saturdays at 12 PM EDT (1600 UTC), and then is published as a podcast shortly thereafter on our website and on iTunes. Anyone is invited to call in live or participate in the live chatroom on TalkShoe, and we have instructions on our website. We really hope you'll join us for the exciting episodes of phpBB Weekly that are coming up!

Easy MODX Script Generator

by geoffreak on Monday, May 28th, 2007 17:40

This is a MODX package creator that allows an easier, faster, and phpbb.com MODDB ready installation package.
An easy to use interface allows mod authors to type in all the information necessary quickly and error-free.
Made from javascript and php, this generator uses AJAX technology to quickly assemble packages.

Maintaining packages is also possible as registered users are permitted to save the scripts through the database.
These saved scripts can be called back any time for editing or package assembling.

What happens to the scripts in the database? They sit there until you need them of course!
Privacy is important and your scripts will never be seen by anyone but yourself.

Just like phpBB, this generator is fluid state and is prone to bugs.
Please report any you can find so that they can be fixed and allow the generator to be used by everyone. :D

This package generator is not open sourced at the moment, but it may wind up on Star Trek Guide or phpbb.com sometime in the future for easier usage and wider audiences.

ACP Notepad MOD

by Waleed on Tuesday, July 24th, 2007 17:40

Description: A notepad module for the phpBB Administration Control Panel where you can save new messages and read, edit or delete old ones. The latest version (1.7) also allows administrators to set a note as 'private,' so that only they may read it. BBCode is supported, and to make reading notes more convenient, a direct link can take an authorized administrator directly to the reading panel. Notes and all related data are stored in a separate database table, with minimal core-file edits.

Future plans:
New features are open to suggestions, but the MOD will never become overloaded so that it doesn't lose its convenience. I hope so...

Modification and Styles Databases are now Open

by Highway of Life on Tuesday, July 24th, 2007 17:40

The Modifications and Styles Databases are now open for submissions for phpBB 2.0 and phpBB 3.0 modifications and styles on http://phpBB.com

To submit a new modification or a style, go to the appropriate page for the MODs Database or Styles Database. In the right hand bar there is a link to Submit a modification or style.

If you are updating a modification or style already in the database or queue, then under the section My Modifications or My Styles, hit the the Manage button next to the modification or style you wish to update and then go to the Update tab.

Fill out the forms and hit submit to add your submission to the queues for the databases. After the modifications or styles Teams have had a chance to review your submission, you will receive a PM stating if your modification or style has been approved or denied with reasons for denial. You then can update your modification or style by going to the My MODs or My Styles sections.

At this time you can't edit the description, title or the tags for the modification or style at this time. We plan on implementing this feature soon.

If you find any bugs, please submit them to the Bug Tracker.

Have fun making modifications and styles and sharing them with the community.
