I've set those up before and have one setup on another site I have shut down.
I run the older version because you can have more than 8 people on it without it costing.

Those are normally used for online gaming when a team is on a server.
Skype is a better alternative to this for us.

Yes, ventrilo VOIP servers are heavily used by the gaming world. Essentially you have a server with a bunch of channels that you set up, to allow users to go into channels and speak to each other. Channels can have as many users as you like in them, and you can have as many channels as you want. The limit is defined by the total number of slots you have on your server. My vent server is 68 slots, so I can have 68 people in one channel or scattered throughout a bunch of channels when people want to be in smaller groups or alone or whatever... It is very handy, not just friends and gamers get together on it, but family members from around the world get together on it too instead of spending on long distance calling.

It is like the ajax chat on here, except it is totally live, full duplex, and is voice instead of type... :)

Yes, I know all that. I don't see the need for that here.

Handyman's chat, if he expands it for private chats with invites is all we need.
We already have Skype setup. I've contacted members here with it already.
I've done ventrilo and I would have to say I would pass.

I would take a pass as well.
I use VoIP, have a softphone and use Skype quite often. Sometimes the phpBB Teams have come together for a bit of chat over Skype, we?ve had over 10 of us in one chat conference at a time. :)
