help needed - looking to get my forum updated

Postby kiffy » 18 Aug 2011, 12:29

hi folks, im looking to get my forum upgraded... had one person do a runner with my money, had another one who tried but couldnt do it so i need an experienced person who can upgrade my forum from 3.0.2 to 3.0.9 and reinstall a few mods.

i dont know if itll make a difference to anyone thinking of doing the job but ive just had a member here try and fail. he does seem experienced but hit issues on the upgrade he couldnt overcome. thankfully i did a backup before he began so it could be reinstated.

if anyone thinks they can do it let me know how much and how quick it can be done

many thanks
steve

You should post a list of installed mods and also styles installed and active.
These will all make a difference in time involved.
Links to original Mod/Style will also be helpful to see if there are updates to them already completed.

I also suggest that who ever does this downloads the site files, minus the config.php and does the updating on a localhost.
Once completed and tested it can then be uploaded to the live site overwriting the old files.
This will help not interfering with the live site (to much) ;) .

In phpbb 3.0.9 (since 3.0.6, actually) there's already a quick reply integrated in the forum (you can see it here). So that's one mod you may not need to reinstall, however if you want a more complete quick reply, you may ask for Full Quick Reply Editor MOD, which allows you to show bbcodes and smilies in quick reply.

As for the instant redirect... I use Prime Instant Redirect instead, which applies to login/logout, acp access, etc. instead of only the post submit.

Phpbb also includes its own anti-bots security measures, like the well-known captcha, or the Q&A to define one or more questions with their own answers.

That Welcome PM MOD seems to have issues that haven't been solved (thus it's been abandoned), so I wouldn't recommend installing this unless you (or the person who takes the job) finds an updated working MOD.

ive a friend with a phpbb forum (same version as i currently have) and she gets a ton of spam members, my forum although not that big has a lot more visitors and with the antibot question ive only had a few spammers in the last couple of years.. but the q&a you mention sounds like the antibot mod anyway.

its funny the welcome pm is problematic as ive not had a single issue with it

From what im seeying here it sounds like an easy job.

The First two MODS (ANTI BOT QUESTION, QUICK REPLY) Arent needed as they've been included in the Core.
And the Second might be easy to find
As for the other two idk how Compatible they are...
Also the Style can be re-installed .....

Sounds like an easy task, if you wish i could give it a try !
But im warning you Ive never worked for anyone...
But I've been Up to date from when ive first installed my 3.0.5 board till nowdays.

Id help you for free, but if you wish to repay me that would be pretty :byebye:

i had tried to update it twice and as soon as the update process would get to the point of looking at the files for the second time, it would throw out a server 500 error. first i tried to download the updated files so i could update them manually and got a 500 error, then tried the FTP update and got the same thing at the same point in the update. i have no idea what the problem could have been.

This is most likely host related being that is a 500 error.
I would download the entire site and database backup and do it on a localhost.
You will have more control and power there than on a live hosting environment.

If all goes well on the localhost, it may work on the live site.
