Beginner's guide to...

I'm new to php and css, not to mention actually running a phpBB 3 forum. I have it all set up and running well with some good mods installed. I also have a few styles installed, but would like to edit them accordingly as to make it fit better into the theme of the boards. For anyone curious, it's a board for an Alliance from the MMO 'OGame'. I was interested to know if anyone could point me in the direction to get a good background for understanding how to modify the styles (resources on how they're made, guides, tutorials of customizing). I thank you in advance for your time.
