[DEV] php Media Center

Ok...so this really isn't a "Mod" for phpBB...but I am going to use the phpBB3 system and hack it up to make it work for what I want...

Just stopping by to hear your ideas on this...

I am not very good at explaining my ideas(especially through typing)...but I will try...

I am thinking of making something like phpBB, except that instead of having threads be for questions and stuff you start a thread for a download(like music or a vid clip, etc) I would do major changes to the templates to make it look right of course, and look the way a download system should. Wink

It would be like a Knowledge base system(or I guess if you have ever visited a widely used torrent site, something like that), except for file sharing(legal intentions of course Wink).

Basically I am thinking that the easiest way to make this would be to take phpBB3, hack it apart, remove all the extra junk that is not needed, and then add stuff that would be needed in for file sharing. I would basically be making it so it is a stand alone system, and then add the option later to make it work with phpBB2/3, or any BB out there.

I have most of the basics down on how I will do it, right now the biggest thing I can think about is to make it so each forum can have different fields when you upload it(like if it was a song you could have the singers name, and album name, if it was a movie you could have a browser plug-in to watch it in your browser, or if it was a torrent it could have a tracker, etc). I think for that I will have a page where someone can add or remove fields/options for certain categories(kinda like the attachments Manage Extensions page) and then in the forums creation/update pages there would be a drop down box that would allow you to select what kind it was(with what options/fields you want).

Ok, it's getting kinda late here...and I am tired...I probably forgot some big stuff I would want to mention, but if I remember I will say it tommarow. Tongue

Wow... that will be quite an undertaking... lot of work involved there, if I got what you are doing.

Don't expect to do it in less than one year if nobody is paying you to do it. Wink
Watch out! I might do a code wheelie!

Wow! that sounds totally cool.
You'll probably have people bugging you about completion time just like phpBB Wink
I just can't wait to see it Grin

Well, I have not figured out quite yet how much work will be involved. Shock
I don't know how much it will take, but it might take a little. Cool

Well, I am kinda hoping that it takes a matter of a few months tops. Tongue
The hardest part(other than things I don't know how to do yet) will be keeping up with updates that are applied to phpBB3 CVS. Tongue

Oh, and I am sure I will be asking for plenty of help from you guys along the way. I know quite a bit about php, but not nearly everything I need to do something like this. Wink

I think I might get started once the project is approved at SourceForge(well, it might take a while since a different project has the same name(it was never active though) but I don't know how it will all go yet)

I'm willing to bet Sourceforge will approve it... and it's usually a max of 5 or 6 days.

Are you sure you don't want to wait for (at least) RC1 before you begin that project?

Well, that may be a good idea, but I still need to learn a lot about phpBB3. The things I start first will be playing with the interfaces(which can easily be carried over and are very unlikely to change).

And I need to design a few other things that don't have anything to do with phpBB3(functions for some other things I will need). So those can be worked on as well. Smile

Ok, I started looking into a few of the things I need...

I have been looking around for a bittorrent tracker, but I can not find any...anyone have any ideas for a php based tracker?

Also, I want to find a way to figure out the length of songs(without asking the user). I did not get to googling that though yet. Tongue
