Announcing XPKG

Postby LEW21 » 30 Aug 2008, 09:01

As all of you know, MODX has a lot of problems. There are two methods of fixing them: continuous development and creation of new format. We (Xtreeme.org Group - me and faw) have selected the second option.

We are very pleased to announce XPKG 0.1 - an innovative XML-based format used for describing software packages, designed with simplicity in mind. It solves a lot of problems: having to update version numbers in all xml files, bad support for package dependencies, bad support for linking to update instructions, no support for chmodding files, running installers, deleting found code and more! You can find more information and technical specifications on http://xtreeme.org/xpkg/

That looked awesome. The example .xml page layout looked Great! I've never liked the look of the MODX page layout.

I've always wished that a line number could be added to the FIND instructions. Example: Find following code. [ Line 1372 ]
Other than listing the line number.... Your page layout has exceeded my vision of what a good .xml page layout should look like. Nice work! :good:

I will think about adding line numbers to XPKG 0.2.

It should be noted that this format will not be supported on phpbb.com, nor accepted in the MOD database as MODX is the required and sole-supported format in that regard.

Neither STG nor phpBB.com will be supporting this format.

Then Janusz, I'd say you guys should come up with a MODX Generator that will have an output page looking like the ones you guys put together.
*slowly steps back behind iWisdom and Highway* :hello:

I loved the look of your .xml page.

The MOD Team has always and will always be open to suggestions for improving MODX. If there are any ?known problems? with MODX, it should be reported to the website bug tracker and the ?problem? will be resolved.
There have been some bugs in MODX 1.2 that have already been fixed, and are on the MOD documentation page. -- there are currently no known bugs or problems with MODX since these fixes.
If there are, we encourage users to report them. -- If you have suggestions for improving MODX, please discuss them with a MOD Team member.
The MOD team has a member who is assigned the main task of developing and improving MODX.

I'm currently working on XPKG generator, probably also supporting loading data from MODX files, but I'm not interested in generating MODX files. MODX is just a bad format, and it will be better for everyone if it will die.

As David has noted, your best bet if you want anything changed is to submit suggestions for MODX. Doing otherwise will likely just create schisms in the community, which is most certainly not a good thing. As has also been pointed out, the MOD team, to my knowledge, has no interest in switching formats, but improving existing formats.

I've also noticed that you're very quick to say that something is wrong with MODX, but you've yet to say what. Perhaps instead of creating a separate format, you should address the issues that you believe are within MODX, and these suggestions can be considered?

Instead of saying ?it would be better for everyone if it will die?, why don?t you explain what?s wrong with it? we still don?t know what you think is wrong with it.
