PMs not showing

Postby Honor » 27 Jun 2011, 13:02

Okay, this is a bleed-over request, as the topic on which I originally put this on was cluttered with other questions.

We are having trouble with PMs randomly not showing in the UCP. It seems to be between specific people. When those PMs don't show, the receiving user doesn't get notification either (sometimes). The PMs are there - they're viewable through the history. They just don't show.

I've got some screenshots now. Okay, well I have 1 screen shot, as the PMs that weren't loading before, are now loading (will send in new ones if needed as I get new PMs...)

I'm trying to view a PM I had just sent, but as you can see, I get nothing. Which means I can't edit it either.

Please fill out the SRT :).

Does this also happen in different styles? If you lookup the IDs of one of these missing PMs in the database and force your way into the PM can you access it at all?

Support Request Template
What version of phpBB are you using? phpBB 3.0.8
What is your board's URL? http://www.blueplanetrp.com
Who do you host your board with? GoDaddy
How did you install your board? I used the download package from phpBB.com
Is your board a fresh install or a conversion? Fresh Install
Do you have any MODs installed? Yes
Is registration required to reproduce this issue? Yes
What MODs do you have installed? Too many to count. A lot of self-tweaking as well.
What styles do you currently have installed? None that aren't self-made besides a heavily modded ProSilver
What language(s) is your board currently using? English
Which database type/version are you using? I Don't Know
What is your level of experience? Comfortable with PHP and phpBB
What username can be used to view this issue? No answer given
What password can be used to view this issue? No answer given
When did your problem begin? When we switched hosts. A lot of things went screwy, including a major screw up of the left and right IDs of the forums - something that took me deleting a whole set of forums that refused to fix after using the STK (and there's still a single forum that I can't get to to delete).

We started noticing the issue when we set up an alternate site for if our host went down. A friend took a backup of our database and created a new one on his own server, and then pointed both sites to the same database so that both domain names would pull from the same information and we wouldn't loose posts or users in the process. At first we thought it might be domain issues, then cookie issues. Neither seem to offer a solution.
Please describe your problem. 1) When a user gets a PM, "most" of the time they are notified, but sometimes they are not.

2) PMs don't tend to want to show. I've noticed recently that if I receive a batch, the first will show, but the rest won't. However, the PMs are ALWAYS viewable if you click "send reply" and then scroll down to the history. Some users are saying that after a long period of time (one thought it might be about 24 hours or so, but this hasn't worked for me yet) the PMs will start loading normally.

The problem isn't actually hard to replicate, but at the same time it seems to be random.

Based on the above - yes, the PMs are making it into the database. It's just that for some reason, the board doesn't always call them up correctly - and I don't know if whatever caused it is the same thing that caused the forum IDs to screw up.

The issue seems to possibly be ProSilver style based - one PM that wouldn't load in Prosilver loaded in the other styles. However, that one PM was just one of a few that are not loading now within ProSilver (there where more, but now some are actually loading correctly).

Very Important Edit worthy of it's own post!

I just now figured out that it's an offline/online user issue. I now have a feeling it's in conjuncture with TopDown's .online css fix he helped me with for one of my styles - something that I had to apply to every style. If you read the last few posts, it makes sense in an odd way that the "broken" styles load the PMs, but the one working style doesn't.

See this topic for all details - including the most recent issue on the last few posts.

I have a very strong suspicion that the PMs aren't loading because it doesn't know what to do with the online image that's supposed to be there. Online user's PMs don't show, Offline user's PMs do.
