I'm going to run an offline upgrade - safest way for me due to all the custom coding I have on my site. Thankfully I only really have to worry about updating 1 style. My other style uses template inheritance  - I need to get that put on a t-shirt lol

The best way to run an upgrade is to do an offline upgrade.

Backup or transfer the database to your localhost. This will allow you to 'preview' if there will be any potential problems with the database update before you run it on the live site.
Run the upgrade process, db update, then the file updates.
Preview the site on your localhost to ensure everything is working as it should. Once the upgrade has worked and been confirmed, disable your live site (ACP -> Board Settings), then upload your files (typically via FTP), including the install directory.
Point your browser to the install directory and run the database update ONLY. No need to run the file update because you have already done that on your localhost and uploaded it to your server. Once the database update is complete, re-enable your site. Total downtime should last only as long as it takes for the files to upload via FTP and for the database update to run. Typically not more than an hour with a bigger update such as 3.0.6

Best time to update? Check to see when your site is at it's least busiest, usually that is around 2 - 3am for the timezone that is most active on your site.
Watch out! I might do a code wheelie!

I'm not too excited about the new Quick Reply implementation.

I've been using Evil Quick Reply, and while I'd love to remove that and go with the new native quick reply, the way they implemented it is bizarre to me. Evil's is great, but the location of the Quick Reply button in 3.0.6 sucks! Why didn't they put the button next to the Post Reply button, and use a Quick Reply button icon too???

Well as they said, they do not want to put the MOD Authors out of business, so if you like the implementation of the Evil Quick Reply better, you should stick with it. :)

You should make a sticky/how-to out of this post and put it in the Upgrade Support forum :drinks:

I have just started a new board and cannot seem to find how to make a sticky? Can you help as I need to make a few of these before my board becomes live.

Also, to avoid asking rank beginners questions here, can you recommend a good beginners book on PHPBB?

As long as the options are enabled and you have the permissions correct in that forum you should have an options box under the post block when makeing a new topic with the options to make a Stickie, Announcement, etc...

There is documentation here http://www.phpbb.com/support/documentation/3.0/
and Flash tutorials here http://www.phpbb.com/support/tutorials/3.0/
Do not PM me for Support unless I give permission in a post......PM's only help one, posts help everyone !
