...but i am going to ask it anyway....

While modding phpbb3 i regularly find two words i really don't know the difference between. Translation from google doesn't make much sense, so for all you native english speaking guys and girls out there. What is the difference between review and preview when using phpbb3?

review = to judge a post (you must preview it to review)
preview = previewing a post

BUT aren't you judging a post (reviewing it) while previewing it ????

Pfffff, going crazy with some of these english terms....... :banghead2:

anyone ??

In Swedish translated from English, it's the same sentence with the word "review" and "preview" a substantive ... so I agree that it is confusing...
(But we're talking about Englishmen  )

If I'm correct (if not you don't have to slap me Jordan ;)) the difference is that a review is after the post was made and a preview before. If you are on the posting page you can review the topic, thus see all posts after they where posted. If you preview the post watch the post before it posted.
Its a small difference but it are two completely different things ;)

Edit: I can't really think of Dutch terms that reflect this case though I think "vooruitblik" en "terugblik" are getting the closest to these terms

That is indeed the proper explenation Erik.
Review: To view something that has already been done, Preview: to view something that has yet to be done.

I could think of these dutch words that would explain it quite simply: (in dutch)

THANKS ALL so far !!!

Preview:
  • An inspection or viewing of something before it is available.
  • In the case of phpBB, an inspection or viewing of a post before it is posted.
  • You can see what it will look like before you post it.
  • Display something before it becomes available. - display the post before it's posted.

Review:
  • Assessment or examination of something.
  • Assessment or examination of something with the possibility or intention of changing it. (a comprehensive review of defense policy | all areas of the company will come under review.)
  • Inspection, examination and assessment are the best three words to describe review. look over something. View or inspect.
  • Analysis, investigation or inquiry. Or study.
  • In the case of phpBB, while in the posting page, you can “review” the last 10 or so posts in the topic in the window at the bottom of the page. -- Where you can quote from posts and put them in your reply.

So you can preview your post before you post it to the topic, and while posting, you can review the last x posts in the topic.
Watch out! I might do a code wheelie!

Basically, a quick overview from me:

It's /all/ about the prefix.

Pre: it implies before an action is taken

it is clear to me now, thanks all, and for the record, i still haven't found really good dutch translations for them. The explanation of david made it exactly clear to me....
