There are other cross-platform database systems available, such as PostgreSQL and SQLite.
IIRC there was a bit of discussion about this when Sun was bought by Oracle, and PostgreSQL seems to be the best alternative from what I've heard.

but i think IP Board is so heavy now (for 3.1.2)
I had installed IP.Board on my shared hosting
it says at least RAM requirement 128 MB
and this not happened when i install VB
