No, # is pound. The US calls it pound, number sign, hash, and sharp sign, depending on the usage. Just because the US calls it pound, doesn't make it wrong.

Exactly Micheal.... my thoughts exactly!

# can be called any of those and none of them are wrong. It depends on what you are using it for.
Very well put!

If it's stated phpbbmod # then it should be (phpbbmod hash)
If it's stated account number # then it should be (account number pound)
If it's stated phone # then it should be (phone number)

The usage was laid out in the topic title and initial post,

How to say #phpbbmod?

I would say "Hash phpbbmod".

What do Americans call the £ sign?

No, I believe Michael is right, it depending on the usage.
If it's stated phpbbmod # then it should be (phpbbmod hash)
If it's stated account number # then it should be (account number pound)
If it's stated phone # then it should be (phone number)
Americans call the £ sign pounds. Doesn't £ pertain to money? We actually use $ for dollars.

I'm not a computer scientist or a Brit - I'm English -

I couldn't have put it better myself
Although, for some reason, # is a symbol used when talking about pound weights

Though in the UK, we use lb for pounds

Both ways are acceptable. It isn't the world, trust me. ;)

And funny, in the US, we use lb as the abbreviation for pound as well. Go figure. ;)
