phpBB2's "Retirement" Announced

At least this topic won't go the way of the topic I posted on phpBB.com. I hate people that go on boards only to cause trouble.

Wow indeed? I can't imagine anybody calling the phpBB developers idiots.
The developers are far from that title? which is how they got to be developers.

To be honest i do think its about time.
php4 has moved on to php5 mysql has gone from 4 to 5. So software is becoming more better, securer, faster and more reliable and to keep up with phpBB2 is just going to be like phpBB3 so instead of 2 versions it will just be the same.

I think people dont like moving to phpBB3 from phpBB2 is becasue the admin panel on BB3 is more complex and harder to learn although its just looking at where to go. Saying that i think if there was a mod or something for phpBB3 to make the Admin panel more like phpBB2 people would be alot happier with it. Although i wouldnt like to see the long list of links for items on the left.

but like buying a house or a car you learn from experiance, you look into how much you will benifit from it.

Heh, about the house? our latest house, being out in the country, needed to come with an instruction manual? so many things to learn since we don't have all the conveniences of the city area? we've been in this house for almost 4 months now and we still don't know how to run everything.

See thats what i mean, You either learn by your self (practice) or read a manual e.g. documentation as there is with phpBB3

Well, as already written by David, this was unavoidable to stay focused. As said by Ashley Pinner [NeoThermic] in one of the latest phpBB Weekly podcasts, it could not be expected Development Team in the long run would maintain two packages [2.0.x and 3.0.x] and at the same time developing a third [3.2.x].

The alternative would be to validate the 2.0.x code base for running PHP5, which have never been done, and the lack of flexibility and features compared to phpBB 3.0.x would still exist. The efforts to do that would not be justified by the outcome.

I consider the timing for releasing the information very fair for everybody.

I've never had problems with phpBB2 on PHP5. In fact, there were some PHP5-fixes made in 2.0.23.

I started out with v2 and learned from it. I now am working with phpBB3 and don't really ever want a phpBB2 board again just because im too used to v3.

But it got me started.

I haven't used phpBB2 in months so it doesn't really effect me, I've already made the transformation. As for sad to see it go, eh, not really, I much prefer phpBB3, a much more powerful and secure bulletin board solution than phpBB2 is, so the sooner the better if you ask me.

I started out with phpBB2 as well last year for the first time and thought it was very easy and simple to use things after getting used to it but also noticed all that hacks that you could do to the board which was a good feature lol but was not secure enough for me. So I obviously stuck with it because of the passion for phpBulletin Board features and all. It is alittle sad to see v2 to go as it got phpBB started basically. And now that I have gotten used to phpBB3 Im noticing there are many great features already installed on the board that you usually had to install as a MOD and now Im Developing for phpBB3 boards right now just styles but trying to understand how to develop MODs.

I also remember hearing on the podcast about the Support Forums being closed down once the full retirement takes place. I think that just as the MODs forums on phpBB.com should stay on the boards but locked even replies as phpBB2 has been around long enough that a big majority of the bugs and problems have already been found but not saying all. If people chose to still stick with phpBB2 without receiving support then they should at least have the old Support Topics open for them to read through to find fixes to bugs and problems.

Every time phpBB introduces a major new version they're always a little quick to drop support for the previous one. It's obvious that people with heavily-modded boards will hesitate or maybe even put off the upgrade. That has always been my complaint, but honestly, phpBB3 is so much of a leap ahead in performance and features that I bit the bullet and made the conversion. I've been gradually adding some of the custom stuff, but most of it wasn't a big loss anyway. There is more than enough new stuff in phpBB3 to make up for it.

When I started with phpBB, it was bb2...I was about instantly turned off by it's Admin Panel which I hated greatly!

But I looked at BB3 and tried it to give phpBB a shot once more. I liked it. I like it even more now because it's easy to MOD. I've got a few WIP MODs even, lol which I'm trying to find the time to finish XD

A couple month "bump" but meh, the topic's stickied.
