What style, browser, resolution sizes ?

Most sites are not 800 x 600 friendly no more. Most people have at least 1024 x 768 now.

This doesn't support large resolutions or small.

With netbooks on the rise I think it is smart to code for smaller resolutions now. Add a little js and make a special stylsheet for 800x600 if you have too.

Also at 800px in a forum style, that would not leave you any room for styling, the post area needs at least 600px minimum and 200 for the profile area, that leaves
zip for outer styling.

The content section is 900-1000px wide so even at 800px you aren't missing much. The background is optimized for browsing in 1024px - 1600px on the default style in IE7, FF2, Opera 9, Safari X, Chrome Beta or Later for all browsers.

phpbb3 is capable of supporting 800x600.
I find this to work great:
Code: Select all
#page-body
{
   min-width:767px;
   width:65%;
}
.postbody {
   width:76%;
}
.postprofile {
   width: 22%;
}

@Sniper_E: I don't own a monitor with a resolution lower than 1280x1024

You have to look towards the future. Netbooks are becoming popular and the Eee PC had a resolution of 800×480. You can still have your site look good for high resolutions - just add some js to support lower ones too. It isn't that hard. (with a low resolution a horizontal scrollbar can take up a lot of space and it is annoying)

To help the background support higher resolutions fade the edges to the background color. Easy fix.

I think the only 2 styles we have here that will handle 800x600 is subsilver2 and our mobile style.
Of course our mobile style will handle 240 width so it doesn't really count.
All of our style look fine in 1024x768 and I'm good with that. My resolution is higher than that also.
I just can't see how someone can stay with the 800x600 resolution. That is just so out of date to me.
But yes, I agree.... it would be nice if all styles looked good in 800x600, but I still wouldn't cater a standard style to that small size.

Now what was your question before we got off on this 800x600 resolution size?

peace.

The second part we have gone over. No more need to beat that dead horse.
As far as the first part.... Have you looked at all our other styles with your high resolution?

Check out our styles....
Style 1: viewtopic.php?style=1&p=94844#p94844
Style 2: viewtopic.php?style=2&p=94844#p94844
Style 3: viewtopic.php?style=3&p=94844#p94844 (our default style)
Style 4: viewtopic.php?style=4&p=94844#p94844
Style 8: viewtopic.php?style=8&p=94844#p94844
Style 9: viewtopic.php?style=9&p=94844#p94844
Style 10: viewtopic.php?style=10&p=94844#p94844

We have multiple style available so that you can choose which one you like the best with your (wide screen)

prosilver works for me at 800*600, without a problem. And, it seems to be the fastest loading style installed on STG. :P

Also new Notebooks generally do not have 800 x 600 resolution, as a matter of fact,
I couldn't find one, which is why most designers design for 1024 as a minimum.

Spoiler:
HP Special Edition Pavilion Laptop with AMD Turion? X2 Ultra ZM-82 Mobile Processor
14.1" WXGA high-definition widescreen display
With HP BrightView Infinity technology and 1280 x 800

Apple® - MacBook® with 13.3"
13.3" TFT-LCD widescreen display with 1280 x 800 resolution

Toshiba - Satellite Laptop with Intel® Centrino®
14.1" WXGA TFT-LCD widescreen display
With TruBrite technology and 1280 x 800 resolution

For the cheapest monitors,E-Machine clunker at 1366 x 768 maximum resolution for $138 the rest were all 1440 x 900 resolution as the lowest
