Quentin Tarantino says his Star Trek project is still happening

In a recent interview, director Quentin Tarantino talks about the fact his Star Trek film project is still very much alive and kicking.

Remember when a new Star Trek film opening at the cineplex was still considered a big deal?

No, Star Trek never quite measured up to the astronomical heights of hype and excitement that Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe have enjoyed. However, a new Star Trek movie used to be a pretty cool event that fans could get themselves worked up about.

Now, not so much.

The last Star Trek film, Star Trek Beyond, was considered a huge financial disappointment, so much so that Paramount needed to try and trim the budget for Star Trek 4, the next Kelvin Timeline film. This lead to massive salary disputes that eventually killed the project altogether.

And with so much of Star Trek now focused on television, with the second season of Star Trek: Discovery wrapped and Star Trek: Picard in production, no one except Trek Nation was all that upset about the franchise no longer being on the big screen.

It seemed the only hope fans had was the Quentin Tarantino Star Trek project that was announced back in late 2017. The problem was that other than Mark L. Smith being hired to turn Tarantino’s idea into an actual script, there has been little to no word on what was going on with the film. And with the dismal fate of Star Trek 4, it was thought the film might never happen.

However, that has all changed in a recent interview Tarantino did with Slashfilm while promoting the new miniseries version of The Hateful Eight on Netflix. He was asked about the status of his Star Trek film and the director said that it is still very much alive and could definitely happen.

At this point it’s unknown if the film will be part of the Kelvin Timeline, the Prime Timeline or some combination of the two. Given this is Quentin Tarantino we’re talking about, anything is possible.

It’s been said before but bears repeating: a Quentin Tarantino-directed Star Trek movie could be just the thing to make people remember how good Trek can be on the big screen. If we’re being honest, at this point it might be the only thing.
