Star Trek Jean-Luc Picard series to stream on Amazon Prime in the UK

Amazon Prime Video has managed to bag the UK rights to Star Trek’s upcoming Jean-Luc Picard series in the UK, with Netflix clinging on to Star Trek: Discovery.

The new show, which will see Patrick Stewart reprise his iconic character for the first time in almost 20 years, will be made available across the UK and Ireland 24 hours after it airs in the United States on CBS.

Amazon’s head of content licensing Brad Beale confirmed the news, saying: ‘We’re thrilled to partner with CBS to bring the newest edition of the storied Star Trek franchise to our international Amazon Prime Video customers.’

He added: ‘With the incredible Sir Patrick Stewart returning as the beloved Jean-Luc Picard, we’re excited we can give Trek fans both old and new the opportunity to see him back in action.

‘It’s a terrific addition to our already robust catalogue of exclusive Amazon Prime Video content.’

Patrick also shared the news in a video shared on Star Trek’s social media page, adding: ‘I am delighted to announce that Star Trek fans around the world, except in the United States and Canada, will soon be able to enjoy the next thrilling chapter of Picard’s life on Amazon Prime Video. Enjoy.’

Filming for the brand new series got underway last month, with showrunner Michael Chabon confirming the news on Instagram.

Sharing a picture of his director’s chair from behind-the-scenes, Michael revealed that the show still remains unnamed, as he captioned the post: ‘First Day! #untitledpicardproject.’

It was also announced in April that The Newsroom’s Alison Pill, Penny Dreadful’s Harry Treadaway and Lonely Boy’s Isa Briones had joined the cast.

Details of their roles are still being kept under wraps, but they’ll be starring alongside Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd and Evan Evagora.

Star Trek Picard is set to arrive later this year.
