Picard Show Tidbits From San Diego Comic-Con

San Diego Comic-Con has begun and lots of news will be coming out all weekend. This includes some news about the new Picard show due out later this year.

Note that if you’re avoiding spoilers, you might want to skip past this article.

Alex Kurtzman and Michael Chabon spoke with Entertainment and dropped some hints about the show and about Jean-Luc Picard. Thus far, we’ve seen Picard in his vineyard with his dog. But in case you were wondering if Picard’s adventures would only take place there, take heart, Picard IS going back into space as rumors had suggested. “Events began to unfold that conspire to take Picard back to the stars,” said Kurtzman. “He will [go to space] but not in a way that anyone expects.

“Because he’s no longer in Starfleet, he no longer carries the weight of that behind him. In some ways, it’s easier to be [a great man] when you’re a captain. But it’s an entirely different thing when you don’t have an army behind you. When you want to get something done and fight an injustice, how do you do that when you’re really only one man?”

In the first season, Picard’s quest will be a serialized story. “[This] isn’t necessarily new for Star Trek,” said Chabon, “but that is new for Picard.”

As has been hinted before, this is a different Picard. “There are many things that haunt Picard,” said Kurtzman, who acknowledged that the failed mission to save Romulus was one of those things.

“He’s a lot older and we’re not shying away from that at all,” said Chabon. “We’re dealing with a man who’s in a very different place in his life.”

But “it was terribly important to us that he remains fundamentally Picard,” said Kurtzman. “You will not see a version that betrays the man we loved from The Next Generation. We’re not doing that. But we wanted to put a character with that level of morality and leadership and who always does the right thing no matter how hard the circumstances…we wanted to put that to the test.”

Kurtzman also said that it was possible that other Next Generation actors could appear as long as their appearances weren’t “cheesy” or cameos for the sake of them being there.
