SDCC 2019: New trailer for Star Trek: Picard arrives

In addition to a full trailer, the Star Trek: Picard portion of the Star Trek Universe panel at SDCC was filled with revelations about the upcoming series.

Holy shit.

That is the only reaction most fans can articulate after a torrent of surprises that came out of the Star Trek Universe panel regarding Star Trek: Picard. The panel, taking place at San Diego Comic-Con, was already filled with news and information, but the Picard section may end up breaking the internet.

First, the biggest news is the new trailer for the series and the many shocks that it contains. Yes, there are Romulans and a Borg cube and a mysterious young woman that needs help, but the most shocking surprise was the appearances of Jeri Ryan and Brent Spiner in the trailer.

As everyone knows, there have been rumors for months that Spiner was going to play some role in Picard. It looks like, since Picard mentions how Data sacrificed himself to save him in Star Trek: Nemesis, that Spiner is playing B4. It also appears that CBS is using CGI to de-age the actor so he can play the role again convincingly.

But the biggest surprise may have been the appearance of Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine. That came completely out of left field and Trek Nation is collectively trying to pick their jaws up off the floor after that revelation.

In addition, Jonathan Del Arco also appears in the trailer, who played Hugh the Borg in several episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. And if that wasn’t enough, showrunner Michael Chabon dropped the bombshell that Jonthan Frakes and Marina Sirtis will reprise their roles as Riker and Troi at some point during the season.

Oh. And it has been officially confirmed by Entertainment Weekly that Picard’s new four-legged friend in named Number One.

Also, the end of the trailer shows that the series will be making its debut in early 2020 and not late 2019 as many were expecting.

From the trailer, it looks like the Borg will play a far larger role in the series than was first thought. The Romulans we expected but the Borg connection is new, but not that surprising. Given Picard’s history with them it would have been a bit odd to see a series named Picard and not have them figure into the narrative in some way.

Most fans will agree that while the expectations for the first Star Trek: Picard trailer were ridiculously high, CBS, Alex Kurtzman and Patrick Stewart somehow managed to not only meet them, but exceed them.
