Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Photos Offer First Look At 32nd Century

Following the Enter the Star Trek Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the first photos from Star Trek: Discovery season 3 have been revealed. The images show Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) arriving 950 years into the future on a strange planet, and meeting new character Cleveland "Book" Booker, played by David Ajala. Somewhat worryingly, there's no sign of the Discovery, which Burnham led into the future using her Red Angel suit.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 2's finale, the crew accepted that the only way to keep the sphere data out of the hands of the villainous AI Control (and thereby prevent galactic genocide) was to fling both the ship and themselves far, far into the future so that the data would be out of reach. Burnham used the Red Angel suit to guide the Discovery through a wormhole, leaving behind not only her brother, Spock (Ethan Peck), but also the man she loved, Ash Tyler (Shazad Latif). Assuming that they successfully changed the timeline, the Discovery is heading to a future that is completely unknown, where the Federation likely doesn't even exist any more.

Our first look at the upcoming season of Star Trek: Discovery gives away little about the future, showing Burnham on a strange planet (this episode was shot in Iceland) with water and green hills. The first person she encounters is Book, who was described by producer Alex Kurtzman as "a character who isn’t exactly what you expect right away." He's apparently also "a character who’s going to break the rules just a little bit." Check out the first photos from Star Trek: Discovery season 3 below:

The crew of the Discovery won't have much time to ease into their new life in the 32nd century, as Kurtzman revealed that "when they get to the other side of the wormhole, they have big problems." Travelling 950 years into the future is bound to take its toll on the Discovery's engineering, and it's clear from these photos that they end up in completely uncharted territory - and possibly separated from Burnham. It looks like Book at least outfits Burnham with a new coat, but can he be trusted?

We have actually visited this approximate time period before, in the Short Treks episode "Calypso." That story focused on a character called Craft (Aldis Hodge) who wakes up on a ship that turns out to be the Discovery, only long-since abandoned by its crew and featuring a highly advanced AI who has been waiting 1000 years for her captain to return. The exact link between "Calypso" and Star Trek: Discovery was never revealed, but perhaps we'll see Craft again in season 3.
