“Star Trek: Short Treks” Season 2 Features 6 Shorts. Final Prelude to “Picard” [SDCC 2019]

During The Star Trek Universe panel at Comic-Con: International in San Diego, Alex Kurtzman announced the second season of Short Treks series, which serve as a prelude for the TV side of the series in Star Trek: Discover and Star Trek: Picard will be six shorts. The first season was four.

The shorts are presented mostly in a non-serialized format regarding different scenarios or side stories involving the auxiliary crew. As much as it wasn’t required viewing, it did provide a bonus to Star Trek fans. The final Short Trek will star Patrick Stewart in a 15-year prelude to the upcoming Star Trek: Picard series that sees the former captain/admiral finding renewed purpose in a life after Starfleet.

Another surprise Kurtzman revealed is some of the shorts will feature Spock (Ethan Peck), Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and Number One (Rebecca Romijn from the USS Enterprise.

Last season in “Runaway”, Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) discovers a young Xahean stowaway with royal blood in Me Hani Ika Hali Ka Po (Mimi Kuzyk. After initially struggling to communicate and finding herself at the tender mercy of the stowaway, Tilly finally succeeds winning her over.

“Calypso” offers a bit of cryptic foreshadowing as a mysterious visitor finds himself rescued by the USS Discovery that’s evolved enough to develop sentience and AI. The two develop a relationship between each other as Craft goes on the mend before he heals up and proceeds on his mission.

“The Brightest Star” offers background information on Saru (Doug Jones) and his people, the Kelpians. Despite the culture’s isolationist nature, Saru’s determination and curiosity veers him to Starfleet where he meets a lieutenant, who would go on to be his future captain in Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh.

“The Escape Artist” delved into the diabolical sociopath, Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson) as we find out how well Mudd becomes a survivor and a serious thorn at the side of bounty hunters who pursue him.

Are you looking forward to the next series of Short Treks? What do you hope to see?
