Star Trek: Discovery Teases an All-New Captain for Season 3

Each season of Star Trek: Discovery has concluded with the titular Federation starship in need of a new captain to lead the crew in further adventures across the cosmos, and Season 2 was no different.

On a CBS Television Studios panel for a Television Critics Association press event, incoming Discovery showrunner Michelle Paradise hinted that the selection of a new commanding officer will grow out of the story, which picks up with Captain Christopher Pike relinquishing command of the USS Discovery before it was transported to the far future.

"I can’t answer any specifics but I will remind that in our finale, as Pike was leaving, he said, ‘We are going to need to choose a new captain,’" explained Paradise. "Saru said, ‘Let’s put a pin in that and see what happens.’ Discovery will need a captain. The pin will need to come out. We will need to address that in-story.”

The first season of Discovery had the starship commanded by Gabriel Lorca, who was revealed to be from the evil Mirror Universe by the end of the season. Following his defeat, Pike served as an interim captain before making Saru acting captain as he returned to command the Enterprise. Whether Saru remains in command is unknown.

Streaming on CBS All Access, Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Commander Michael Burnham, Doug Jones as Commander Saru, Anthony Rapp as Lt. Commander Paul Stamets, Mary Wiseman as Ensign Sylvia Tilly, Shazad Latif as Ash Tyler, Wilson Cruz as Dr. Hugh Culber, Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Mary Chieffo as L'Rell, Tig Notaro as Chief Engineer Reno, Ethan Peck as Spock, Rebecca Romijn as Number One and Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou. Season 2 is available in its entirety now.
