Jason Issacs reveals the differences between the Harry Potter and Star Trek fandoms

Having appeared in Harry Potter and Star Trek, Jason Issacs has been a part of two of the biggest and best-loved franchises ever.

The star played Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies based on J.K. Rowling’s popular books, and also played Captain Lorca in Netflix show Star Trek Discovery.

So it’s fair to say he knows a thing or two about fandoms, and believes that Potterheads and Trekkies are two of the most ‘passionate’.

Speaking at the premiere of new Star Trek show Picard, Jason said: ‘People have been Star Trek fans for over 50 years.’

Acknowledging how long the Potter fandom has been around he went on: ‘It was lovely to meet lots of the Harry Potter fans who are reading it to their kids whose kids are now fans, and that happens with Star Trek too.

‘So that’s a, you know, they’re passionate for different reasons. But it’s the same thing, they found stories and characters that speak to them and often help people in difficult, challenging times and that’s another story.’

He was also not giving anything away when asked if he would return to Star Trek, but admitted that he didn’t miss the blue spacesuit one bit.

‘That’s the one thing I’m not missing,’ he said.

‘I miss many of the other things. I miss the people mostly, but I certainly don’t squeeze myself into that balloon animal outfit every morning.’

Jason was joined on the red carpet by Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Isa Briones and Harry Treadaway.

Star Trek: Picard will see Patrick Stewart reprise his iconic TV role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, who previously appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The new show will catch up with Picard decades after the events of his original series.

Star Trek: Picard launches 24 January on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
