Star Trek: Simon Pegg is Skeptical About the Movie Franchise’s Future

Simon Pegg has cast further doubts over Star Trek 4 as the actor said he thinks Paramount's sci-fi franchise simply doesn't make enough money.

Back in 2009, J.J Abrams rebooted the long-running Star Trek franchise and cast Pegg alongside the likes of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Karl Urban. This was followed by Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness in 2013 and Justin Lin's Star Trek Beyond in 2016. However, with the last movie failing to set the box office alight, the series has been left in development hell.

Pegg told GamesRadarhow Star Trek can't compete with other blockbuster franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe: "The fact is, Star Trek movies don’t make Marvel money," he said. "They make maybe $500 million at the most, and to make one now, on the scale they’ve set themselves, is $200 million. You have to make three times that to make a profit. I don’t feel like the last one… They didn’t really take advantage of the 50th anniversary. The regimen at the time dropped the ball on the promo of the film. And we’ve lost momentum. I think losing Anton [Yelchin] was a huge blow to our little family, and our enthusiasm to do another one might have been affected by that. So I don’t know.”

Although Beyond made a respectable $343.5 million, the studio was reportedly unhappy with the third movie's box office. Typically, Marvel movies pull in huge numbers, with 2019 movies Avengers: EndgameCaptain Marvel, and Spider-Man: Far FromHome all crossing the billion-dollar mark.

After there were rumors Quentin Tarantino would direct his own movie - possibly separate to the Kelvin Timeline - the latest reports state Fargo's Noah Hawley is working on a direct continuation. Late last year, Pegg said Tarantino's movie could still happen, however, disputed that Hawley's sequel to Beyond will get to see the light of day.
