Star Trek: Discovery makes history with introduction of non-binary and trans characters in season 3

Star Trekhas always been about diversity and Gene Roddenberry's ideal vision of the future, and Discoveryis putting its money where its mouth is in season 3 with the appropriate casting for two new characters: one of whom is non-binary and another whom is transgender.

As reported by Deadline, the non-binary character Adira will join the crew of the USS Discovery and bond with Dr Hugh Culber and Lieutenant Commander Paul Stamets. Adira is noted to be highly intelligent, so it's not a surprise at all that they'll get along with Stamets.

This will be the first on screen role for non-binary actor Blu del Barrio, who was in their final year at LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts) when they auditioned.

Trans character Gray has dreamed of being a host for the Trill, but something will happen to him that will turn his life upside down. What that event is is just something we'll have to speculate on for now.

Gray will be played by Ian Alexander, who previously played transgender characters Buck Vu in The OA and Liv in The Last of Us Part II.

Co-showrunner Michelle Paradise is quoted as saying: "Star Trek has always made a mission of giving visibility to underrepresented communities because it believes in showing people that a future without division on the basis of race, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation is entirely within our reach.

"We take pride in working closely with Blu del Barrio, Ian Alexander and Nick Adams at GLAAD to create the extraordinary characters of Adira and Gray, and bring their stories to life with empathy, understanding, empowerment and joy."

One thing we are very excited about in season 3 of Discovery is that Michelle Yeoh's Philippa Georgiou will be out for revenge against Michael Burnham, and she will be very "pissed off" indeed.

One thing we're a bit cautious about is what season 3 will do to the franchise's canon, as co-creator Alex Kurtzman has previously warned that the events of the third season are likely to cause some major debate among Trekkies.

Star Trek: Discovery returns for season 3 on October 15, 2020. It airs on CBS All Access in the US and Netflix internationally, including the UK.
