Star Trek: Discovery season 3 introducing first trans and non-binary characters to the fleet

Star Trek’s universe is continuing to expand and will first ever transgender and non-binary characters introduced in Discovery season 3.

The show, which has always championed Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations, will see two new members of the fleet joining in on the adventures.

Adira (played by Blu del Barrio) will find themselves being taken under the wing of Wilson Cruz’s Dr Hugh Culber and husband Lt. Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp).

Soon their intelligence becomes useful on the ship.

Non-binary, Adira has been described by Deadline was ‘highly intelligent with a confidence and self-assurance well beyond their years’.

Blu is a non-binary actor who has been training at London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) before landing this life-changing role.

They will be joined by Gray, a transgender character played by The OA star Ian Alexander.

Ian, 19, previously made history as TV’s first ever out transgender Asian-American actor.

Warm and kind-hearted, Gray’s dream is to become a Trill host, but life soon takes an unexpected turn.

But then again, since when is anything expected in space?!

Star Trek: Discovery’s co-showrunner Michelle Paradise said of the announcement: ‘Star Trek has always made a mission of giving visibility to underrepresented communities because it believes in showing people that a future without division on the basis of race, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation is entirely within our reach.’

Star Trek: Discovery launches October 15 on CBS All Access and Netflix.
