Star Trek: Lower Decks: Rutherford Suffers a HUGE Change

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 1, Episode 10, "No Small Parts," now streaming on CBS All Access.

When Ensign Sam Rutherford first appeared in the series premiere of Star Trek: Lower Decks, the Starfleet Officer had recently received a cybernetic implant in his head. The implant altered his physical appearance, and it gave him special abilities that made him even more proficient at his job. Sure, the implant wasn't without its problems every now and then, but more often than not, it allowed Rutherford to go above and beyond in his tasks aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos. All of that changes in the Season 1 finale, though, because Rutherford loses his cybernetic implant and his memory.

In "No Small Parts," the crew of the Cerritos answer a distress signal sent out by the U.S.S. Solvang. However, when they arrive at the ship's destination, they only find a wreck. The entire crew has been lost following the total destruction of the Solvang at the hands of the Pakleds, a race of aliens who steal all manner of technology and weaponry from other species. Because of this, they have an incredibly powerful ship that is easily able to incapacitate the Cerritos.

The Pakleds then begin a full invasion of the ship, and the crew fights back. With few options to overcome the Pakleds, Rutherford devises a plan to plant a computer virus aboard their ship. With the virus loaded up in his cybernetic implant, Rutherford travels to the Pakled ship along with Lieutenant Shaxs.

With the situation getting increasingly worse aboard the Pakled ship thanks to the return of Badgey, Shaxs ends up making the ultimate sacrifice to defeat their enemy -- but not before he saves Rutherford. Shaxs rips the implant from Rutherford's head, and he shoves him back into their shuttle to fly back to the Cerritos. With the implant still in Shaxs' grasp, Badgey self-destructs, creating an explosion that takes out the entire ship.

Once the fighting is done, Rutherford is taken to the Cerritos' sickbay. He has a bandage over his head, which indicates that he hasn't gotten get a new cybernetic implant. Now, he's back to being a regular human, which in and of itself is a pretty big change for the character. But that's not all, the removal of the implant also had an unforeseen consequence: Rutherford has lost his memory, which means he doesn't remember Tendi, or their recent adventures aboard the Cerritos.

Thankfully, Rutherford and Tendi sees this as an opportunity to become best friends all over again. Before the episode comes to an end, Rutherford shows signs that he's remembering his fellow crew with Tendi's help. Still, when he appears in Season 2, Rutherford will be wholly different. He'll likely no longer have his cybernetic implant, and his role and relationships aboard the Cerritos may have changed.

Streaming on CBS All Access, Star Trek: Lower Decks stars Tawny Newsome as Ensign Beckett Mariner, Eugene Cordero as Ensign Rutherford, Jack Quaid as Ensign Brad Boimler, Noël Wells as Ensign Tendi, Dawnn Lewis as Captain Carol Freeman, Jerry O'Connell as Commander Jack Ransom, Gillian Vigman as Doctor T'Ana and Fred Tatasciore as Lieutenant Shaxs.
