Star Trek Discovery season 3: Burnham meets mysterious new character – but is he friend or foe?

Star Trek: Discovery season 3 got off to a rocky start for Commander Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) as she finds herself stranded on a planet 920 years in the future.

Picking up moments after season two ended, Burnham crash lands in a new world through a wormhole – and is left devastated when the Discovery isn’t right behind her.

Trying to figure out what to do next, she soon finds herself in a run-in with the mysterious Book (David Ajala), who is fuming that she knocked him out of the sky and damaged his own ship.

And by the looks of it, Book has some shady dealings going on – even if he is charming.

With a cat named Grudge and his own priorities, Book claims to be a courier, though what he actually is remains to be seen.

But a lot changes in a millenium, and Burnham soon discovers that her weaponry it severely outdated, and both The Federation and Starfleet lie in ruins.

Caught up in a mysterious explosion known as The Burn 100 years before Burnham arrived, Starfleet and The Federation were never able to recover, partly down to the use of fuel source dilithium.

So, finding the small remnants of the Federation that remains, Burnham is now on a mission to figure out what exactly is going on.

Book (real name Cleveland Booker) is right by her side the entire time, and after their chance meet, it seems she’s struck lucky with this newbie, whose rough demeanour is hiding a sensitive soul.

He may be a bit of a looter and not quite the ‘courier’ he claimed to be, but he’s actually an environment and animal loving rogue.

Saving alien creatures in need, Book has taken to hiding them to keep them protected.

In fact, he’s such a good guy, he almost seems too good to be true – though maybe we’re just skeptical after one too many betrayals.

Star Trek: Discovery airs Thursdays on CBS in the US, and Fridays on Netflix in the UK.
