Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Will Contain More Grudge The Cat

Good news, Star Trek: Discovery fans: There will be a lot more of Grudge the cat in season 3. After a hiatus that stretched well over a year, Discovery season 3 has officially begun. The season premiere arrived on CBS All Access last Thursday, picking up from the season 2 cliffhanger that completely changed the landscape of the entire series. To escape rogue A.I. Control, Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) grabbed a new Red Angel suit and took off into the future, with the USS Discovery not far behind her. Discovery season 3 picks up with Burnham making her rather rough landing into the 32nd century.

In addition to learning about the Burn that effectively destroyed the Federation, Burnham crosses paths with Cleveland "Book" Booker (David Ajala), a courier who takes Burnham under his wing. Book is a character who's new to Discovery, though his role in the third season has been teased since last year. Perhaps the most exciting thing about him is his feline companion: Book has a cat named Grudge, who also made her debut in the Discovery season 3 premiere. Like any adorable animal sidekick, Grudge quickly won over viewers, which is why this piece of news will likely be met with celebration.

While speaking to TVLine, co-showrunner Michelle Paradise assured Grudge's many admirers that the cat will be sticking around for a bit. "Grudge is Book’s first lady love, and we will be seeing a fair amount of Grudge this season. We won’t overplay Grudge, but Grudge is an important part of Book’s life, and is with him on his ship. We will be seeing Grudge again," Paradise said. She also called Grudge an "absolute hit," which she also seemed to predict well ahead of time. When it comes to production, Paradise said, "Everyone, of course, wants to be on set on the days when we’re shooting the cat. Including me."

Just as Book is poised to play a pivotal part in Discovery season 3, it looks like Grudge will get her fair share of the spotlight too. This isn't surprising, since Book very clearly cares about Grudge a great deal. Whether Grudge will once again appear in the newly-announced Discovery season 4 will likely depend on how this season goes for Book, but it's safe to say that there are a lot of people who would be happy to see the fluffy cat stick around.

The 32nd century contains many notable changes, from the lack of starships to new kinds of technology. Already, Discovery season 3 has shown the massive time jump can open the door to new creative opportunities for the series, and only one episode has aired so far. The next order of business: Finding out where the Discovery and its crew have gone. Burnham has yet to reunite with them, but with Book's help (and Grudge's, of course), she might be able to track them down in the next episode. Fans will have to tune in to see.

Star Trek: Discovery season 3 continues on Thursday on CBS All Access.
