Did Star Trek Beyond go above and beyond at the box office?

Star Trek Beyond claimed the #1 spot at the weekend box office, taking in an estimated $59.6 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

While this is a strong start for the third film in the rebooted franchise, Beyond still fell short of the previous Star Trek movie. Star Trek Into Darkness made $70.1 million during its opening weekend and went on the gross $228.8 million domestically. Star Trek Beyond will likely make $180-190 million domestically, which will match its budget of $185 million. It will need to do well internationally to show a real profit. The studio seems to have confidence in the picture, however, as Star Trek 4 has already been announced.

The Secret Life of Pets came in second place, making $29.3 million. Domestically, the animated feature has made a total of $260 million. Pets may never catch up to Pixar’s Finding Dory, which is now the ninth biggest domestic release of all-time. Regardless, it’s been another huge hit for Universal and Illumination Entertainment.

It was a close race for #3 place between Ghostbusters and the thriller Lights Out, both of which made an estimated $21.6 million. While Ghostbusters might narrowly edge out the competition, it still dropped 53%. With a budget of $144 million, the reboot has grossed $86.8 million domestically and $120 million worldwide. Although Sony is already pushing for a sequel, Ghostbusters will really need to hang in there to warrant further instalments.

Rounding out the top five was Ice Age: Collision Course, which was easily the weekend’s biggest financial disappointment. Where the previous four Ice Age films managed to open with over $40 million, this fifth installment could only bring in $21 million. With that said, Collision Course could still perform well internationally, as Ice Age is currently the biggest animated franchise worldwide. Since the latest film couldn’t compete with the likes of Pets and Dory, though, maybe it’s time for this series to go extinct.
