The First Star Trek: Discovery Trailer Teases All the Show Will Explore

After revealing teaser images earlier this week, CBS released the first look at the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery television show with a trailer. The trailer shows off Michelle Yeoh as Captain Philippa Georgiou and Sonequa Martin-Green as First Officer Michael Burnham, and see the return of many well-known races to the franchise, including Klingons and Vulcans.

Star Trek: Discovery will be the first new Star Trek show in 12 years, and will actually take place 10 years before the events of its predecessor, The Enterprise. Despite its name, the first look shows off quite a bit of action – including tension with the Klingons – and mirrors a more militant Starfleet than the exploration focused mindset of the 1966 show.

Though they have received their fair share of praise, the action focused themes of the movies have been criticized for straying away from Star Trek morals and values in order to succeed in the current movie climate. Considering its name, and that this is only the first look, our fingers are crossed that Discovery will have more exploration than action, and hopefully, delves into the philosophy fans remember from characters like data in The Next Generation.

While the trailer is packed filled with action and CGI, there are elements of exploration in the trailer as well, as Burnham can be seen launching off into the far reaches of federation space in an Iron Man like space suit.

Alongside Burnham and Yeoh, Star Trek: Discovery is set to star Jason Isaacs(Harry Potter) as Captain Lorca and will feature 15 episodes. While the trailer shows a more concrete timeframe for its release, after numerous bumps in the road and delays, there is still no exact release date for the project.

Catch Star Trek: Discovery when it airs on CBS this Fall, and be sure to stay tuned to the site for our official review of the first season as it airs.
