‘Wrath Of Khan’ Director Gives His Opinion On ‘Star Trek: Into Darkness’

Let’s wind the clock back to around 2012-2013. Star Trek: Into Darkness is soon to hit theaters, but everyone has their eye on Benedict Cumberbatch’s mysterious new character of “John Harrison.” And everyone, from J.J. Abrams to Simon Pegg to Alice Eve to Cumberbatch himself all insisted about one thing: Cumberbatch was not playing Khan, in a nod to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Right. And Marian Cotillard wasn’t playing Talia in The Dark Knight Rises, right?

Obviously, none of this was true. And Abrams has gone on to regret the secrecy around that decision, not to mention how many who reviewed Star Trek: Into Darkness found a number of similarities to Wrath of Khan. But what about the actual person behind the camera who directed the film? Yes, Nicholas Meyer, who directed the second of the original Star Trek films, had a bit to say when doing an interview with the YouTube channel Midnight’s Edge. He discussed various topics, such as his introduction to the Trek series.

But naturally, if they’re going to talk about Wrath of Khan, they’re going to talk about the film that drew inspiration from it decades later. And here’s what Meyer had to say about Star Trek: Into Darkness:

Meyer went on to call the “homage” more of a gimmick, which isn’t too far off, given that instead of Kirk watching Spock make the sacrificial play to save others, during Into Darkness we had Spock watch Kirk die in order to save the Enterprise, all compounded with Zachary Quinto giving us his take on the infamous “Khan” scream made famous by William Shatner in Wrath of Khan:

So Nicholas Meyer isn’t saying that he flat out detested or hated the film, but that there are better ways to homage something than how Into Darkness did. I tend to agree. What do you say, though?
