Star Trek: Discovery’s Sonequa Martin-Green rules out popular Spock and Burnham theory

Star Trek: Discovery’s second season has begun looking at the dysfunctional relationship between Spock and his adopted sister Burnham.

Although viewers are yet to see Ethan Peck’s Spock and his controversial beard, the first episode of the new series showed a flashback of Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) being adopted by Amanda Grayson (Mia Kirshner) and Sarek (James Fain), with the half-Vulcan, half-human being standoffish about having a new sibling.

The scenes set the wheels in motion for an explanation as to why Spock has never mentioned having a sister, which is still being unraveled.

Fans have been busy speculating that the distance between the two characters is because their relationship turned into something romantic, but actress Sonequa has shot this theory to the ground – and we are eternally grateful.

‘There is a theory I want to talk to you all about,’ she said during an appearance on The Talk, ‘People are saying that maybe they had a sexual relationship, and that’s why they’re estranged? NOT TRUE.

‘I saw that, and I saw a few articles about it. I am here today to say no-no.’

Sonequa added that Spock and Burnham’s relationship is ‘comp-li-ca-ted.’ But you know, not that kind of comp-li-ca-ted.

Showrunner Alex Kurtzman also denied that the sibling’s backstory was to do with anything seedy, telling: ‘Oh God, it has nothing to do with anything romantic.’

So that’s that.

Star Trek: Discovery airs Thursdays on CBS All Access in the US, with episodes releasing Friday on Netflix UK.
