Star Trek: Section 31 spin-off with Michelle Yeoh is "a good couple of years away"

Star Trek's Picard series is filming soon with stars already being cast, but those waiting for the Section 31 spin-off starring Michelle Yeoh are in for a much longer wait.

A number of CBS executives had a panel in Israel, and naturally they were asked about the Star Trek TV franchise.

Speaking about the offshoot series with Yeoh's character Captain Philippa Georgiou, CBS Television Studios president David Stapf gave a rough timeframe on when fans can expect production to ramp up behind the scenes.

"It's a good couple of years away," he said.

In January, CBS All Access exec Julie McNamara said that no date was attached to the series, which is "in development".

"Some of these [series] can be considered as replacements as opposed to additions," she said. "These Trek shows take a lot of incubation because they're very prep-heavy, visual effects-heavy."

Yeoh has, however, been confirmed for Star Trek: Discovery season three, so we will definitely be seeing more of her in the immediate future.

Star Trek boss Alex Kurtzman recently commented that they have learnt from mistakes made from previous spin-offs including Deep Space Nine and Voyager, indicating that they're willing to take their time to ensure they get things right.

"What we're planning on is, I want to make sure that each show is a different and unique proposition," he stressed.

Star Trek: Discovery airs on CBS All Access in the US and on Netflix in the UK.
