Star Trek's next spin-off will see teenagers hijack a Starfleet ship

The Star Trekfranchise is expanding and the next instalment will be an animated spin-off series featuring a bunch of lawless teenagers.

According to TV Line, the show is being executive produced by Dan and Kevin Hageman, alongside the likes of Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek: Discoveryco-showrunner), Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, Katie Krentz and Trevor Roth.

It's set to air on Nickelodeon.

An official synopsis for the new animation confirms that it will "follow a group of lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it to search for adventure, meaning and salvation".

The Hageman brothers added in a statement: "Star Trek, Nickelodeon and the state of animation are doing incredibly ambitious things as of late, we couldn't be more excited to jump aboard."

This isn't the first animated effort from the Star Trek family, either, as The Animated Series ran for 22 episodes between 1973 and '74.

Excited to bring this new project to young Trekkie viewers, Kurtzman noted: "Star Trek's mission is to inspire generations of dreamers to build a brighter future.

"Dan and Kevin have crafted a story that honours its exploratory spirit in a way that's never been done before, while the Nickelodeon team blew us away with their excitement at bringing Trek to a younger generation around the world."

As well as this animated offering, fans can also look forward to a "10-episode movie" Picard spin-off.
