Scopely Acquires Dublin-Based DIGIT Game Studios, Expanding European Footprint

The Irish studio has partnered with Scopely since 2015 and the two collaborated on the mobile game 'Star Trek Fleet Command.'

Culver City-based mobile game studio Scopely has further expanded into Europe, acquiring Irish game developer DIGIT Game Studios on Thursday. The company previously opened offices in Barcelona in 2017.

DIGIT has partnered with Scopely since 2015, collaborating on the massive multiplayer online strategy game Star Trek Fleet Command, based on the recent trilogy of films, which launched in November 2018. The game has surpassed $50 million in revenue since its release.

DIGIT founder Richard Barnwell will continue to run the Dublin-based studio. Prior to forming DIGIT, Barnwell served as CEO of Jolt Online Gaming and held several positions at Jagex, makers of the online RPG Runescape and the UK's largest independent games developer and publisher.

“We partnered with Scopely in 2015 to enable us to grow our team and focus on building world-class strategy games,” said Barnwell. “The success we've seen with Star Trek Fleet Command has been absolutely amazing and formalizing our relationship will allow us to scale the game even more. We can’t wait to see what else we can accomplish together.”

With the acquisition of DIGIT, Scopely will add 70 employees, almost doubling its European footprint (the Barcelona office has grown to over 75 employees).

Founded in 2011, Scopely also recently announced it will more than double its Los Angeles footprint by 2020.
