Star Trek: The Next Generation veteran has joined the cast of the upcoming season of Penny Dreadful.

Deadlinereports that Brent Spiner has joined the cast of the new incarnation of the Showtime series as Capt. Ned Vanderhoff, the captain of the Hollenbeck police station. Vanderhoff is described as a man desperately trying to keep things under control on the volatile city of Los Angeles on the eve of World War II. Spiner famously portrayed Data, a synthetic life form who slowly discovered his humanity over the course of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The new season of Penny Dreadful reboots the series, leaving the previous cast in Victorian England and focusing on a murder mystery in the City of Angels, forcing Vega to investigate the various corners of the city. This leads to him running up against Nazis, Mexican-American folklore and the rise of evangelist radio.

Created, written and executive produced by John Logan, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels stars Daniel Zovatto, Natalie Dormer, Nathan Lane, Jessica Garza and Johnathan Nieves.
