Star Trek: Picard series gets first trailer as Patrick Stewart returns
CBS has released the first trailer for Star Trek: Picard, which sees Patrick Stewart return to the iconic character after 17 years.
The upcoming spin-off series sees Stewart reprise his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, after departing the character following 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis.
The first trailer has since been released, which shows off our first look at the returning Picard while an ominous voice questions why he left Starfleet.
The voice says: ’15 years ago today, you led us out of the darkness. You commanded the greatest rescue armada in history, then the unimaginable.
‘What did that cost you? Your faith. Your faith in us. Your faith in yourself. Tell us, why did you leave Starfleet Admiral?’
The new series picks up 18 years after the events of Nemesis, where Picard has left Starfleet to live out life on his famous vineyard surrounded by peace, grapes and wine.
Speaking about the series after announcing his return to the role last year, Stewart said: ‘He may not be a captain anymore. He may not be the Jean Luc you recognise and know so well. It may be a very different individual, someone who has been changed by his experiences.’
He added: ‘It will be something, I guarantee it, something very, very different.’
Showrunner Alex Kurtzman has previously stated how the show will explore Jean-Luc Picard’s mindset, in a hopeful bid to return to the light.
Speaking to the LA Times, Kurtzman said: ‘What happens when circumstances have conspired to not give him the happiest of endings?
‘Hopefully it’s a reinforcement of [Trek creator Gene] Roddenberry’s vision of optimism. He’s going to have to go through deep valleys to get back to the light.’
The series also stars Michelle Hurd, Santiago Cabrera, Evan Evagora, Alison Pill, Harry Treadaway and Isa Briones.
The series will air on CBS: All Access in the US, while the UK can watch the show on Amazon Prime.
