Shatner Supports Tarantino’s R-Rated Trek Movie

Earlier this week, Quentin Tarantino spoke about his potential Star Trek movie, saying that if he directs the movie, it won’t be for the kiddies. “It’s an R-rated movie,” he said. “If I do it, it’ll be R-rated. There’s a script that exists for it now. I need to weigh in on it, but I haven’t been able to do that yet.”

Evidently, this has displeased some fans, and William Shatner took to Twitter to defend Tarantino. “Why are people plotzing about this? It’s my understanding that Star Trek: Discovery has used expletives in some episodes. Why aren’t people melting down over that?”

Swearing in Trek was pretty tame in the series and original series movies, with most cussing limited to “damn it” or “hell” or the like. Shatner as Kirk used “dumbass” while trying to navigate his way around San Francisco in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

So there is precedent for swearing in Trek. Whether the R-rating would come from the language or the action, or both, remains to be seen.
