Kurtzman On The Future Of Star Trek

Alex Kurtzman is walking that tricky line of making Star Trek that both the old school fans and the newest of Trek fans will enjoy.

In an interview with Deadline, Kurtzman said, “Render onto Caesar what is Caesar’s; everybody from the older generation should be incorporated into the new generation; there should always be respect for both and yet it always has to forge new ground. The plan is multiple shows.”

Kurtzman explained the timeline when it comes to creating a new Star Trek show. “It takes really a year from writing to finished product, sort of like animation,” he said. “I have to plan two or three years out from now.”

Many fans are keenly interested in Star Trek: The Picard Show and just how Jean-Luc Picard has changed. “A lot has happened to Jean-Luc Picard in the intervening years,” said Kurtzman. “He had to deal with some new things, and some old things. Both things collide together and he’s made choices that he’s not necessarily feeling great about.

“…something has caused him to leave Star fleet and we will find out a lot more about what happened.”

CBR reported more on the podcast with Kurtzman, and the crew of the Enterprise as seen on Star Trek: Discovery. “I would be remiss to say we would see Spock on Discovery again,” he said; “because we’ve obviously jumped so far into the future that it wouldn’t make sense. But [in terms of] the idea of bringing Anson, Ethan, Rebecca and the Enterprise back…we loved it so much. To find a way to do that is something that we’re thinking about a lot.”

“The fans have been heard,” he said, referring to an online petition from fans about a Pike-led Star Trek show. “One of the most gratifying things is to see how deeply the fans have embraced Pike, Spock, Number One and the Enterprise. The idea of getting to tell more stories with them would be a delight for all of us.”
