Star Trek: Discovery Showrunner Thinking About the Enterprise's Return

The crew behind Star Trek: Discovery have been contemplating a return engagement of the USS Enterprise to the franchise's ever-expanding universe.

Showrunner Alex Kurtzman was asked about the prospects of bringing back the famous vessel from The Original Series on Deadline's "Crew Call" podcast. Season 2 of Discovery, which featured TOS characters like Captain Pike (Anson Mount), Spock (Ethan Peck), and Number One (Rebecca Romijn), ended with the titular vessel being flung far into the future, as those left behind set out on their own mission. But despite the Enterprise's involvement on Discovery concluding, Kurtzman has allegedly still considered showcasing the flagship Federation vessel.

"I would be remiss to say we would see Spock on Discovery again," he says, "because we've obviously jumped so far into the future that it wouldn't make sense. But [in terms of] the idea of bringing Anson, Ethan, Rebecca and the Enterprise back... we loved it so much. To find a way to do that is something that we're thinking about a lot."

Fans lauded Mount and Peck's unique performances and characterizations in season two of Discovery. One Trekker even started an online petition for a Pike-led spinoff series that garnered over 28,000 signatures. When asked about the petition for The Hollywood Reporter after the Discovery finale, Kurtzman was over the moon about the feedback.

"The fans have been heard," he said. "One of the most gratifying things is to see how deeply the fans have embraced Pike, Spock, Number One and the Enterprise. The idea of getting to tell more stories with them would be a delight for all of us."

Streaming on CBS All Access, Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Commander Michael Burnham, Doug Jones as Commander Saru, Anthony Rapp as Lt. Commander Paul Stamets, Mary Wiseman as Ensign Sylvia Tilly, Shazad Latif as Ash Tyler, Wilson Cruz as Dr. Hugh Culber, Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Mary Chieffo as L'Rell, Tig Notaro as Chief Engineer Reno, Ethan Peck as Spock, Rebecca Romijn as Number One and Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou.
