Star Trek: Picard Is About Much More than Patrick Stewart's Iconic Character
CBS All Access' new sci-fi drama Star Trek: Picard will focus on Sir Patrick Stewart's iconic Star Trek: The Next Generation character, but while Picard may be the first Trek series to be named after its main protagonist, the show will feature an ensemble cast.
The last time audiences saw Jean-Luc Picard in action was in 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis, the fourth and final film to feature the Next Generation cast.
Picard's executive producer, Alex Kurtzman, participated in the latest edition of Deadline's Crew Call podcast. When asked how the new solo series would center itself around the theme of "family tradition" established by Trek creator, Gene Roddenberry, Kurztman explained, "It’s something that has been baked into the DNA of Picard.”
Kurtzman compared the new show to Stewart's previous work, “Yes, obviously, it is Patrick’s show but we have a unbelievable cast. The thing I loved about the Next Gen cast is that you really could have focused any episode on any of them, you know, and I would say the same about our cast now." The executive producer adds, "It’s such an incredibly brilliant group of actors… and they’re given such amazing things to do that, without spoiling anything, I think you will feel that [same feeling].”
The teaser behind the CBS All Access drama reveals Picard has been living out his retirement since leaving his post as Admiral. The narration mentions something happened in Picard's rescue armada that caused him to lose faith. This event gave enough reason for the former Admiral to leave Starfleet.
The first season of Picard will run for 10 episodes, with two back-to-back episodes by the same director. Another returning cast member from Next Generation, Jonathan Frakes, will direct the upcoming third and fourth episodes.
Star Trek: Picard stars Patrick Stewart, Santiago Cabrera Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Alison Pill, Harry Treadaway and Isa Briones. The series is set to debut later in 2019 on CBS All Access.
