Star Trek's Alex Kurtzman Teases Four More Live-Action 'Short Treks'
While no start date for principal photography on Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery has been announced yet by CBS All Access and Star Trek: Picard still months away from premiering, the premium streaming service is planned more Short Treks to help tide fans over with the wait.
The series features mini-episodes lasting less than 20 minutes focused on individual Discovery characters. The first set premiered this past October, bridging the gap between the first and second seasons of the Star Trek series. For the second set, Star Trek producer and Discovery co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman has confirmed there will be six, with four live-action and two animated.

What I love about the Short Treks is that they are an experimental training ground, a place to experiment with different things - directors who we’ve never worked with before, tones we’ve never tried before," Kurtzman explained in an interview with Deadline. "Michael Giacchino is doing one of the animated shorts; Olatunde Osunsanmi is doing another one in the animated shorts and he’s our main director on Discovery, and again, different animation styles, totally different tones. Aimed at kids, I would say, more than adults, those two."
Giacchino scored the 2009 Star Trek reboot and Star Trek Into Darkness, with both films produced and co-written by Kurtzman. The Short Treks mini-episode marks the prolific composer's directorial debut.
It is unknown whom the subjects of the upcoming set are and if the two animated shorts will involve Discovery or the animated Star Trek series that CBS has in active development or when the shorts will debut.
Streaming on CBS All Access, Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Commander Michael Burnham, Doug Jones as Commander Saru, Anthony Rapp as Lt. Commander Paul Stamets, Mary Wiseman as Ensign Sylvia Tilly, Shazad Latif as Ash Tyler, Wilson Cruz as Dr. Hugh Culber, Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Mary Chieffo as L'Rell, Tig Notaro as Chief Engineer Reno, Ethan Peck as Spock, Rebecca Romijn as Number One and Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou.
