Star Trek: Picard Hires Michael Chabon as Showrunner

Star Trek: Picard, the upcoming CBS All Access series starring the beloved The Next Generation captain, has found its showrunner in novelist Michael Chabon, according to Deadline. Chabon, who joined the show's writers room last fall, is best-known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay about two Jewish cousins who break into the comic book industry in the 1940s. Chabon is known for injecting elements of fantasy and science fiction into more traditional literary works. 

Chabon is collaborating with executive producers Akiva Goldsman and Alex Kurtzman on Star Trek: Picard, which sees the return of Patrick Stewart to the role he first played in the late '80s and early '90s. Hanelle Culpepper (The Flash) is set to direct the pilot as well as the second episode of the series.

“Star Trekhas been an important part of my way of thinking about the world, the future, human nature, storytelling and myself since I was ten years old,” Chabon said in a statement. “I come to work every day in a state of joy and awe at having been entrusted with the character and the world of Jean-Luc Picard, with this vibrant strand of the rich, intricate and complex tapestry that is Trek.’”

Star Trek: Picard will air on CBS All Access in 2019.
