Star Trek: Picard Trailer Brings Back The Next Generation Cast

The first official trailer for Star Trek: Picard was shown at San Diego Comic Con 2019. Patrick Stewart's Enterprise-D captain was initially debuted in Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987 and across 7 seasons, the actor helped make Picard an iconic figure of the science fiction genre. Jean-Luc Picard would go on to star in a series of Star Trek movie releases, but the character made what appeared to be his final bow in 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis. Stewart has refrained from reprising his Star Trek role ever since, but in August 2018, the legendary actor confirmed that the rumors of a Picard-focused spinoff series were true.

Officially unveiled under the title Star Trek: Picard, the spinoff was confirmed to be airing on CBS' own in-house streaming service, CBS All Access, and would explore the former Starfleet captain's life after retirement. Further details revealed that Picard would be haunted by the destruction of Romulus (as mentioned in the 2009 Star Trek movie reboot) and had relocated to his family vineyard for some well-deserved peace and quiet. Images released since have offered glimpses at the new Starfleet uniforms and Picard's canine companion. Riker himself, otherwise known as Jonathan Frakes, will act as a director on Star Trek: Picard, which will be a serialized venture.

The first trailer for Star Trek: Picard has now been revealed at the Star Trek SDCC 2019 panel (via CBS) and Jean-Luc Picard is officially back in action. In a huge surprise move, the footage includes appearances from Brent Spiner as Data and Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine. The panel went on to reveal the return of Jonathan Del Arco, who portrayed Hugh Borg on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The trailer begins with Picard reflecting on his former life, ruing how his new vineyard home doesn't feel quite as natural as his days among the stars. Picard's journey begins with the arrival of a mysterious young woman who comes to the former captain seeking aid, triggering the start of an adventure that sees Stewart's character board a seemingly non-Starfleet space vessel and encounter Star Trek: Voyager's Seven of Nine. The footage rounds off with an emotional scene of Picard playing a game of cards with his old friend, Data.

The Star Trek: Picard trailer was undoubtedly the biggest news to come out of the Star Trek SDCC panel. It had previously been speculated that Picard would work his way back into space eventually, and that the spinoff might include a cameo or two from some familiar faces, but the trailer exceeds expectations in both regards. Star Trek: Picard looks far more like a traditional Star Trek series than the initial marketing suggested, with mystery, action and adventure all in generous supply.

Star Trek: Picard also appears to be more of a direct sequel than many fans anticipated. Seven of Nine looks set to have a major role in the series, joining Picard on his journey in a move that nobody predicted beforehand. Brent Spiner reprising his role as Data will also have Star Trek fans cracking out the Saurian brandy, however, Picard's line about not wanting the game to end may suggest that the character's role is restricted to some kind of holodeck program. Nevertheless, the return of these familiar faces in any capacity is cause for celebration.
