Was The Son Of Satan Originally Going to Star...Just Satan?

Welcome to Comic Book Legends Revealed! This is the seven hundred and forty-fifth installment where we examine comic book legends and whether they are true or false.

As usual, there will be three posts, one for each of the three legends.

NOTE: If my Twitter page hits 5,000 followers, I'll do a bonus edition of Comic Book Legends Revealed that week. Great deal, right? So go follow my Twitter page, Brian_Cronin!

COMIC LEGEND:

Son of Satan was originally going to be about Satan himself

STATUS:

True

Recently, I wrote about the evolution of the name of Daimon Hellstrom, the Son of Satan (who is about to star in a TV series where he is re-named Helstrom, literally taking the "Hell" out of Hellstrom). On Facebook, my pal Avash asked why I didn't discuss an interesting aspect of the creation of the character and the simple answer was that I was planning on running this Comic Book Legends Revealed when CBR asked me to write the Hellstrom name article and I figured I'd save that part for now, so, well, here we are!

Okay, let's set the scene. It's the early 1970s, and the Comics Code has been relaxed so that now horror-themed characters are allowed under the Code. Marvel has responded to this new allowance by releasing a bunch of new horror-themed characters that went over well with readers, such as Werewolf by Night...

Ghost Rider...

and, most notably, the Tomb of Dracula, starring that evil vampire, Dracula, and the folks who try to fight against him...

Dracula is the most notable one because that was the basic set-up that Stan Lee wanted for a new series that would be called The Mark of Satan, a la The Tomb of Dracula. And again, it would be about good guys trying to fight against Satan.

Roy Thomas, though, thought it was too soon for a comic book literally starring SATAN. He then pitched the idea for the SON of Satan instead and Stan, in effect, told him, "Eh, so long as it includes Satan in the title" and so the Son of Satan was born!

Pretty smart thinking by Thomas!
