Star Trek: Short Treks Shows Spock's First Day on the Enterprise
The newest installment in Star Trek's CBS All Access Short Treks series looks at Spock's very annoying first day on the Enterprise. After a long continuous run on television beginning in 1987 with Star Trek: The Next Generation and ending in 2005 with Star Trek: Enterprise, Trek took a long break from the small screen (while J.J. Abrams took over the reins of the Trek movie universe beginning in 2009). But 2017 saw the end of that extended Trek TV drought when CBS All Access debuted Star Trek: Discovery, a series set before the events of Star Trek: TOS, and centering on a new crew headed up by Sonequa Martin-Green's Michael Burnham.
Though Discovery did much to upset Star Trek canon (to the chagrin of many hardcore fans), the show did also dip back into long-established Trek lore, especially in season 2 when it brought back not only the Enterprise but Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and of course the beloved Spock, played by Ethan Peck. With the success of Discovery, a Trek renaissance was on at All Access, and the network was quick to capitalize with a new slate of Trek-related shows including Short Treks, a series of one-off shorts set in the Trek universe and centered on various different characters. Of course, the upcoming All Access schedule also includes Picard, featuring the return of Patrick Stewart's beloved Starship captain (as well as a few other characters from TNG).
With Discovery season 2 now in the books and Picard getting set to debut in January 2020, new installments of Short Treks are hitting CBS All Access to tide fans over, including one all about Spock enjoying his first day as a member of the crew of the Enterprise. Entitled Q&A, the ep features Spock getting a crash course on the ship from Number One (Rebecca Romijn), who begins to regret the whole situation after she and the very inquisitive Vulcan get trapped in a turbolift. It's already been revealed that, in addition to the Spock-centric Q&A, the next round of Short Treks episodes will include Tribbles and Captain Pike. See a trailer for Q&A below (via CBR) as well as a full schedule of Short Treks episodes (via Trek Core):
Like previous Short Treks installments, Q&A is very narrow in its focus, homing in on just the two characters caught in a very specific situation. Of course, the humor in the episode comes from Spock's Vulcan nature, which often causes some funny clashes with his less-logical and more emotional human counterparts. And it indeed bears mentioning that this Short Trek may not be the end of Spock's run on All Access, as the network is reportedly considering a new series focused on the famous Vulcan as well as Pike.
Luckily, Q&A is already available on streaming from CBS All Access, with more Short Treks episodes to come. Though these are nothing more than bite-sized Trek adventures, they do at least provide something to chew on for Trek fans as they anxiously await both Discovery season 3 and Picard, as well as all the other upcoming Trek shows including the animated Lower Decks and a Section 31 spinoff. And who knows what other Star Trek ideas Alex Kurtzman and company are cooking up as CBS All Access attempts to make hay with its most valuable property.
