Star Trek's newest Short Treks trailer teases Picard connection

In many ways, Star Trek: Picard will boldly go where no series has gone before, but rest assured there will be plenty of familiar faces, references, winks, and nods to the wider Trek universe.

The first connection, in fact, will arrive before Picard itself, when new Short Treks episode 'Children of Mars' premieres later this month.

Although details of 'Children of Mars' have been kept mostly under wraps, it's expected the short will have a direct connection to the upcoming Picard series – serving as a prequel before Patrick Stewart returns in the titular role on January 23.

The official description for the special tie-in episode gives nothing away, but promises to introduce two "12 year-old classmates Kima and Lil". In the short, the girls will "find themselves at odds with each other" on a day that ultimately changes their lives forever.

Speaking of connections, a recent teaser for Picard confirmed fans' hopes of a Next Generation mini-reunion, despite Sir Patrick's reluctance to invite too many of the iconic characters back.

In the latest trailer, the Enterprise's first officer Commander Will Riker and ship counsellor Deanna Troi were spotted making their return, delighting Trekkies everywhere.

Star Trek: Picard has a premiere date of January 23, 2020. It will air on CBS All Access in the US and Amazon Prime internationally, including the UK.
