Star Trek: Picard TV Spots Reveal New Information About Data

Of all the familiar characters to join Jean-Luc Picard in the upcoming CBS All Access series Star Trek: Picard, the most surprising was Brent Spiner reprising his fan-favorite role as the android Data.

Picard's longtime crew mate and fellow Starfleet officer had met his untimely end during the final battle of the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis. However, two new promos confirm Data's return, with the first providing a brief glimpse of the character apparently painting at Picard's family vineyard in France (where Jean-Luc has retired to).

A second promo provides even more hints as to how Data has seemingly returned from the grave, if considerably more subtle, with its choice of background song "Blue Skies."

The classic song was sung by Data at William Riker and Deanna Troi's wedding in Nemesis to open the film. Before his demise, Data implanted his memory engrams into his newly discovered counterpart B-4's neural pathways. As Picard mourned the loss of Data, B-4 began humming "Blue Skies," hinting at the character's resurrection in his "brother's" body.

Star Trek: Picard stars Patrick Stewart, Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera and Harry Treadaway. The series is set to premiere on CBS All Access Jan. 23, 2020.
