CBS Plans Clarice Starling TV Series

CBS has closed deals for the crime drama series “Clarice,” based on the famous character of Clarice Starling from Thomas Harris’ Hannibal Lecter novels.

The series will be set in 1993, and a year after the events of “The Silence Of the Lambs”. It will track Clarice Starling as she returns to the field to pursue serial murderers and sexual predators while navigating the high stakes political world of Washington, D.C.

The project currently has a pilot script written and the plan is to go to series, but that decision won’t be made until a pilot has been filmed even as the series has a lot of support at the network. Jodie Foster and Julianne Moore have previously played the character on screen.

MGM and CBS Television Studios are backing the project which hails from “Star Trek: Discovery” executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Jenny Lumet and Heather Kadin. The project has no connection to Bryan Fuller’s acclaimed “Hannibal” series for NBC a few years back which wasn’t able to use the Starling character or elements from the ‘Silence’ novel, and this would seem to put a nail in any chance of a revival of that incarnation.

Kurtzman and Lumet are also involved in this month’s “Star Trek: Picard” and the upcoming “The Man Who Fell to Earth” TV series which are all set up at CBS All Access.
